I heard that my Carpenters were French from two older cousins when I first
started doing my research. They are both gone now. My oldest known
ancestor was Samuel Carpenter, d. about 1818 in Mecklenburg County, VA. I
found out that my great-grandmother had a french name, so I assumed that was
where it came from, but maybe not.
DNA shows that our family is somehow connected with the "tidewater"
Carpenters in Virginia, also with some who moved to Alabama, although we
don't have a documented connection. Has anybody in your family had the DNA
test?

Please pardon my interruption , I am from Georgia, my ancestor is
Bailey
Carpenter 1765-1834, he was for many years believed to be the brother of
Stephen Cullis Carpenter, Stephen is listed in the SC Archives in the
1700's . Sandra Carpenter Jay went to the Ga Archives and copied the
bibles
of the Carpenters inside written somewhere in the late 1700's it states
that the Carpenters were French. Is anyone working on the Georgia
Carpenters.? Thanks so much for allowing me to post this, Dorothy Smith
