Hello,
I have received some queries about the Old Newman Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island.
Some are planning to visit and others interested in images of the many Carpenters buried
there.
You can use Google or your favorite search engine to find this graveyard and directions to
it. It is located at the juncture of Newman Ave. & Pawtucket Ave. in East Providence,
Rhode Island.
As cited in Carpenter Sketches by Gene Zubrinsky for the William Carpenter2 sketch. See:
http://carpentercousins.com/carplink.htm
BURIAL: William2’s grave marker is an ordinary field stone inscribed with the initials
“WC” and “1658” chiseled below it; nearby are wife Abigail’s headstone (“AC”) and
footstone (“1686”) (Early Rehoboth 4:32, 34–35). An image of the former is available
online at
www.genealogy.com/users/c/a/r/John-W-Carpenter/PHOTO/0001photo.html.
The image cited in the above link is no longer valid. The image at Find a Grave (FaG)
clearly shows the WC and 1658 below the WC. See:

Per Wikipedia ...
The Newman Cemetery is an historic cemetery in East Providence, Rhode Island. One of the
oldest in the state, the cemetery was established in 1643, when the area was part of
Rehoboth, Massachusetts. It is located at the southwest corner of Newman and Pawtucket
Avenues, adjacent to the Newman Congregational Church. Its first recorded burial is in
1658, and it remained in use well into the 19th century. The cemetery was added to the
National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

There are supposed to be some 226 Carpenter related graves in Newman Cemetery. There are
many images there. This per Find a Grave (FaG).

Also known as: Rhode Island Hist. Cemetery East Providence #3

Cemetery notes and/or description:
Newman Cemetery is beside Hunt Cemetery with no obvious boundary, so all listings should
be placed carefully. Newman is a very old cemetery, its oldest marked grave dating back to
the 1650s. It is no longer in use. (The above is a FaG citation)
The Rhode Island Historical Cemeteries Commission has that the Newman Cemetery is owned by
the NEWMAN HUNT CEMETERY CORP. It has some 2000 burials and some 1775 inscriptions. It
also provides a map. And the web page has many nice images. I like number 8.

They write ...
This cemetery was originally in Rehoboth, MA. In 1812 the western half of Rehoboth was set
off as a separate township called Seekonk, Ma. In 1862 the western part of Old Seekonk was
ceeded to Rhode Island and was incorporated as East Providence, RI. It is 10.25 acres.
Copied in 1850 by David Jillson; 1932 by Marion Pearce Carter, 1970s by Robert Trim, and
by Ira Peck about 1860. Most photos by Julie Nathanson 2008-2009. Others by Vincent Luti
about 1980 and John Sterling in 1995.
