Marg,
Yep, Tis was I.
I finally tracked down the possible Edwin Carpenter-71312 who was in
Stranger Township, Leavenworth, Kansas, USA in 1880. Thanks to newer Gould
Family records posted on line, I have ruled him out as being your Reuben.
Your Edwin Reuben Carpenter-28349 (b. 20 May 1827 Wilmington, Windham,
Vermont, USA) was son of Cyrus Carpenter-6758 (29 Dec 1794 Guilford,
Windham, Vermont, USA - 5 Jan 1871 Brockport, Monroe, New York, USA and
buried in High Street Cemetery) and Hannah Jenny-28362 (abt 1800 , Rutland,
Vermont, USA) - abt 1830/1831
near, Jay, Essex, New York, USA).
[Your] Edwin arrived in Australia circa 1853 from America. Gold had recently
been
discovered here and that could have been the reason for him coming.
He may have arrived on a ship named 'Alabama' ( to be confirmed) He married
Margaret Leslie, an emigrant from Aberdeen, Scotland. His occupation at
that
time was stated as a painter ( ? of houses not portraits, I think).
Edwin returned home to visit his parents and was in the process of returning
to
Australia when he disappeared. It is assumed he died somewhere in the USA.
He had his photograph taken in Brockport (NY) by photographer N.E. Baker and
sent it to his family in a letter.
He was never heard from again.
The other Edwin - Edwin S. Carpenter-71312 (b. 30 Jan 1834 Corinth, Orange,
Vermont, USA - d. 28 May 1898 near Hog Creek, Stranger Township,
Leavenworth, Kansas, USA) was the son of Calvin Carpenter-69626 (10 Sep 1798
Plainfield, Sullivan, New Hampshire, USA - 14 Mar 1883 Corinth, Orange,
Vermont, USA) and Betsey E. Reynolds-69627 (23 Apr 1799 Cambridge, Lamoille,
Vermont, USA - 21 Apr 1879 Corinth, Orange, Vermont, USA).
Edwin C-71312 married as his second wife Maria Antoinette Gould-95304 about
1875 likely in Missouri, USA.
Best Wishes!

Subject: [CARPENTER] Qld CARPENTER info
Hi John,
I think I have you to thank for helping someone find me .Somehow
a suitcase full of old photos, cards ,letters belonging to my
husbands aunty ,Amy GRAHAM nee CARPENTER who died in 1984 in
Queensland Australia, has
survived . The real estate agent is a family history buff and
decided to try to find a CARPENTER family member
A long time ago I asked a couple of now deceased CARPENTERs what
happened to contents of Aunty Amy's . My husband ,as a then
teenager, remembers it as a museum full of old stuff !
The email addresses you gave him were both old, but still helped
I am now waiting for the third amazing phone call aka things
come in 3's The first one came some 3 weeks ago when an old
friend who I shared a flat with in London 50 years ago found me
!!
Rootswebs archives helped in both
thanks again
