Vivian,
While the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project does not track the Family Finder
(atDNA) test or MtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) , I am aware of many who have
tested with that autosomal DNA (atDNA) test. This includes myself. I come
from the Rehoboth, MA Carpenters represented by Group 3 of the Y-DNA
Project.
There were several Carpenter lines who went through Edgefield County, SC.
In the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project Group 16 and Group 24 have ancestry
there. Group 24 in particular came from Cumberland, now Moore, County, NC.
I do not think any of Group 24 have taken an autosomal DNA test like Family
Finder. See links below.
This type of atDNA test shows ethnic breakdowns and for Family Finder it
shows DNA segments that you get from both sides of the family. Depending on
the size of a matching segment, the FTDNA computer calculates the likely
relationship to anyone at FTDNA who has taken that same test.
The Family Finder test and other autosomal tests that are similar, are
designed for two reasons. The first being the ethnic breakdown given. So
much European, African, et cetera. The second, unique for FTDNA, is to find
matching chromosome segments that are measured in centimorgans (cM). FTDNA
supplies a chromosome chart where the matching segments are located on.
Other companies do not do this. See the comparison chart at:
http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_chart
The primary problem with such tests, is the genealogy. Both people being
tested need to have a genealogy back to a common ancestor. Then and only
then can you confirm the relationship which you already would have known
with the genealogy. This is why it is not a great genealogy tool. Many
people get very frustrated when they can not confirm any matches. Many just
give up and that is very sad.
The best way to find a match is to recruit one. Find another biological
relative within 4 generations of the common ancestor and have them take the
Family Finder test. Then compare the results. It should confirm the
genealogy.
Another DNA test or option is to find a living male biological Carpenter
cousin. Test them with a Y-DNA test and they should likely match Group 24 or
Group 16.
I have emailed this message via Bcc to the two Group 24 members. Maybe they
will email or call you.
I have attached my Family Finder (atDNA) chromosomal closest matches. I have
blurred the match names and image for privacy. The 5 closest matches are 3rd
or 4th cousins. None have a genealogical match with me.
I hope this helps.

Subject: [CARPENTER] HAS ANYONE DONE THE FAMILY FINDER TEST
ATFAMILYTREEDNA.COM IN HOUSTON?
Carpenter list members,
Has anyone on this Carpenter list done the Family Finder
test with
FAMILYTREEDNA.COM in Houston, Texas? Am I on your list of matches?
My paternal grandmother was a Carpenter from Edgefield District/County,
South Carolina. The family moved to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia,
after 1900. None of her brothers had sons to carry on the Carpenter
surname.
The line moved from Cumberland-Moore County, North Carolina, in the form of
Adam Carpenter and his wife, Milly (Matilda) (some claim Mildred) maybe
Sheffield about 1804. I have posted about this family connection on this
list in the past. I have also done a mtDNA test. However, this is on my
father's side and not in my maternal line. I have 130 pages of 10 people
each that are matches from 2nd cousins back to 5th and remote. Of the
limited number of people I have contacted, most do not respond. Of the ones
who have responded, they have no idea how we are related. Many do not have
any surnames posted either. I am on dialup, live in a rural area. Takes
forever to get the page up and about half the time it is busy. Carpenters
were there by c. 1765 or before.
Any Carpenter matches out there.
