If Joseph Carpenter was born in 1692, then he was 97 years old when his
will was written, and would have been 105 when it was proved. I think
Joseph may have been younger, and his childern also may have been born
at later dates. In the Carpenter Memorial, Jesse is said to have been
born about 1740, and then it says he died in 1815, aged 60 years, making
him born in 1755. It may have been Joseph's son, John Carpenter,
married to Frances McGarrah, daughter of James and Eleanor (Little)
McGarrah, she was baptized 14 Jan 1753. John Carpenter died about 1825
in Lumberland, Sullivan, NY.
Joseph leaves to his son Benjamin land that was, in 1789, in the
possession of David Clark. In 1790 census David Clark is found in
Goshen next to Benjamin Carpenter. Colvill Carpenter and Joseph
Carpenter, Jr., are also listed nearby. The Carpenter Memorial says
that Benjamin married Mary Combs and resided in Jamaica, NY, and his son
Benjamin married Lydia Chandler and was at Goshen, NY. Records from
Grace Church seem to indicate that Benjamin Carpenter, Jr., was there in
1794 when his father died, and in 1798 when his mother died, and in 1802
when (his sister) "Mrs. Sutherland" died. Perhaps the Benjamin
Carpenter who married Lydia Chandler was a son of Joseph, and not a
grandson.
Henry Youngs (Sr.) of Goshen has a will dated 14 Sep 1743. An
abstract of his will says he left his wife Ruth "a certain bond that
came by her, in Connecticut money, and all the title that came to me
from her belongings in Stratford, Connecticut." It appears this Ruth
was from Connecticut, and probably not a daughter of Joseph.
Elizabeth, wife of Israel Wickham, is said to have been a daughter of
Joseph Carpenter of Goshen. She died before 1777, when Israel Wickham
married Abigail (Tusten) Knapp, widow of John Knapp, whose will was
witnessed by Carman Carpenter.
