Hello Margaret & Robin,
Isaac's father John (RIN 12755) has his family listed on page 82 & 83 of the
Carpenter Memorial. Per the CM "Gen. 7 Children 9, b. Jamaica, L. I." A hand
written note in my copy of the CM adds "after 1721 Goshen N. Y."
My copy of the CM has many handwritten notes that have been fairly accurate compared to
the general mistakes and assumptions of the CM. Whether it is in this situation or not is
not known to me.
On page 251 of the CM, under family 128, is Isaac's family. Only 2 children are
listed.
875 Susan b. 25 Oct 1806
876 Ruth Ann born 6 Sep 1810
Yet, in his notes it mentions "His son Daniel was the executor of his will." And
he is noted as having 2 wives ...
Marriage 1: Susanna Horton, relict of Capt. Little, they married on 6 Sep 1781 and she
died on 30 Aug 1803.
Marriage 2: Susanna McKinney, widow of G. Thompson, they married 13 Nov 1804.
Why does the CM exclude Daniel "his son?" The reason is simple. When they were
contacted, primarily by letter, they were requested was to list who was in their family.
If someone had died they were often not listed.
For example: John, born 3 June 1730 who died young, is not listed in the CM as the son of
John under family 42 on page 82-83.
If they remarried, most only listed their current family, unless members of the previous
family were living with them.
This type of exclusion is the most common error found in the CM.
"In letters found among his papers is mentioned a Jonathan Carpenter." Who is
this Jonathan Carpenter? In my current Carpenter data base, we know he is not a nephew,
first or second cousin. He may have been a third cousin who was a Loyalist and went to
Canada. There is no known contact between the families. (late note: continue reading
before saying "But!" - look for the *)
It is assumed that Jonathan was a son of Isaac from his first marriage. Let me stress it
is assumed, but no other evidence has been given.

... The 1790 U.S. Census lists three Carpenters in the
town of Minisink in Orange County NY:
Daniel 1-2-2-0-0
Benjamin 2-0-3-0-0
William 1-3-2-0-0
Benjamin and William are listed near each other, probably indicating they were close
neighbors.
(NOTE: Benjamin and William were sons of Benjamin & Eunice Carpenter. JRC)
Daniel Carpenter, is probably the son of Isaac and "was the executor of his
(father's) will." Time and locale is consistent.
What is really needed is a search of the 1800, 1810 and 1820 US Census records tracking
this Daniel Carpenter and maybe finding the elusive Jonathan Carpenter. This would be a
good first step.
By research, we can determine if there was any other Jonathan other than the Jonathan
mentioned here below.
* "This problem caught my attention because of my own Jonathan (son
of Carman), born around 1790, who could just as easily be the Jonathan
referenced in a Isaac's letters. Indeed, my Jonathan could MORE easily be
the Jonathan of Isaac's letters, due to the simple fact that at least we
know this Jonathan (of Carman) existed. If there is any evidence of a
Jonathan son of Isaac (or indeed, evidence of ANY other Jonathan born in
Orange Count around 1790), I'd be pleased to know of it. In my view, any
presumption about the Jonathan said to be mentioned among Isaac's letters
must look first among whatever Jonathans are otherwise known to have existed."
Carman Carpenter-109263 and John Carpenter 3rd-12755 are 1st cousins 1 time removed.
Their common ancestors are John Carpenter (See ECZ notes)-587 and Hannah Smith-589.
* Robin, I would really like to have a copy of your line from Carman Carpenter b. circa
1754. Why, because I do not have your Jonathan listed.
Can anyone on the list supply any more information of this family?
