Subject: Another whole John Carpenter line!
Dear John:
For ages I have been trying to sort out the William B. Carpenter line and
the Samuel B.
Carpenter line (mostly to make sure that it didn't fit into my direct line
as I have Sam's
and Williams in about the same area).
(I THINK this is Union Mills Cem, Broadalbin NY but my notes are not clear
as I was
doing several cemeteries at once.)
William B. goes back to a John Carpenter born 1790 (don't know parentage of
this
John, do you???).
John Carpenter (b. 1790) died 5/20/1862 age 72 married to an Abigail born
1808 died
Aug 9, 1857 age 47
dau. Anna Maria b. 1820 died Oct 21, 1849 in her 20th yr.
dau. Helena Mary b. 1832 died Jan 15, 1854 in her 22nd yr.
son William B. Carpenter b. 1834. He died in Battle of Wilderness near
Spottsylvania
Courthouse May 11, 1864. He was enlisted in the 77th Regiment NY Vol.
Company E.
His wife was Angeline (?) b. 1850 died Feb. 16, 1890 age 40.
So at least now I know that William B. goes back to this John. Where do we
connect
him??

EASTPORT TO NY CITY by John R. Carpenter of 8138
John, Thank you very much for your reply and the great piece of information
you
shared so kindly! I had no idea Sea Cliff was home to some Carpenter
Loyalists but
this could account for why William C. Carpenter went to Queens Co while his
other
siblings settled in Eastport.
Here is why I think your clue is so valuable:
William C. Carpenter's parents are Anthony W. Carpenter 1773-1827 and Mary
____?
1770-1827. Both died in Eastport Maine.
I think this Anthony W. who I found in Newmarket, Rockingham County, NH in
1790
is a descendant of Solomon Carpenter of Goshen NY which I found on your
Carpenter
CD!
Then Anthony W. Carpenter is found on a land petition in Charlotte County NB
in
1807. (I have been waiting for this record from NB since December)
Anthony W. Carpenter's father had a sister, Elizabeth who married a Tory,
Nathaniel
Rogers and went to New Brunswick where it is possible that Anthony W.
Carpenter
went with this family or on his own.
I am very grateful for your help which has always been so generous and for
the
CARPENTER CD!

Dr. John Carpenter, who married Margaret Smith is mentioned in Moffat
Genealogies, by R. Burnham Moffat, 1910 (Google Books)
pages 76, 77, a son of Anthony and Mary (Moffat) Carpenter (p.68, 69),
this would make Dr. John Carpenter number 8376 in the Carpenter
Memorial, page 787. Moffat sources A. B. Carpenter for parents of
Anthony, but I believe he may be repeating an error, since there appears
to be just one Anthony Carpenter in Orange county at this time, he may
have been a son of John Carpenter, Number 369 in the Carpenter Memorial,
page 91, Family #162, page 166.
His will dated 03 Oct 1760, proved 08 Nov 1760.
Mentions wife Elinor, children Anthony (not 21), Hannah, Eunice and
Elinor.
Anthony Carpenter was one of the executors of the will of Benjamin Gale,
of Goshen, NY, dated 28 Feb 1782, proved 22 Mar 1786. Mentions wife
Eleanor, daughter Keziah, brother Coe Gale and others.
Benjamn Gale married Elenor Carpenter, 02 Jun 1763 in NY. (possibly
widow of John) source: Names of persons for whom marriage licenses were
issued by the secretary of the province of New York, previous to 1784,
published 1869, page 147.
Coe Gale, married Hannah Carpenter. (possibly his brother's step
daughter) source: The early records of the First Presbyterian Church at
Goshen ..., Charles C. Coleman, 1934, page 103. Hannah probably died
before 27 Jul 1789 when Coe Gale married Elizabeth (Waters) Wisner.
Keziah Gale married David Mandeville Westcott. (ibid, p.122)
Miss Eleanor Carpenter died 23 Jun 1829 at the house of Col. David M.
Westcott. (possiby his wife's half sister)
