Gene, this shows one of the dangers in not keeping up with data, which is a
big problem of mine. I try to always make sure that what I share is correct
but since I put everything in boxes to do some remodeling I haven't been
able to make myself go thru the boxes and straigthen things out, putting
things where they belong so I don't have the data for all this. I am sure
that you're right anyway since I know you are a more experienced and skilled
researcher than I, and I appreciate that when I'm exchanging data.

Subject: [CARPENTER] John Mac Carpenter's Descent from William1 Carpenter
ofProvidence
John Mac Carpenter wrote:
<< . . . the line from Wm of Providence to me goes thru
Joseph, m. Hannah, daughter of Wm of Rehoboth;
here I deverge from John L,
William, b. 1662/1666, Muscetta Cove, LI, NY, m. Elizabeth Smith Mudge,
Silas, b. 1692/94, m. Jane Thorneycraft (I'm very curious about the
Thorneycrafts) >>
The suggestion that the maiden name of Elizabeth, wife of William3
Carpenter (Joseph2, William1 of Providence) might have been Mudge
originated with
George William Cocks (see his _History and Genealogy of the Cock–Cocks–Cox
Family: Descended from James and Sarah Cook of Killingworth upon
Matinecock, in the Township of Oysterbay, Long Island, N.Y._, 2nd ed.
[New York,
1914], 358, 385). (Where, please, does Smith come from? Middle names
were
virtually nonexistent in the 17th century.) Cocks says that William's
wife
Elizabeth's parentage is "not certainly known, but may have been Moses and
Elizabeth (Weeden) Mudge, then of Musketa Cove, who had a dau. Elizabeth,
b.
28/12 mo. (Feb.) 1674." Note that this is expressed as no more than a
possibility. There is, moreover, no known basis for the assertion that
Moses
and Elizabeth Mudge had a daughter Elizabeth, let alone that she was born
on the date stated (which is not to say that either is necessarily false).
In the most recent and authoritative account of Moses Mudge and his
family,
Gale Ion Harris, FASG (citing an unpublished typescript by Harry Macy
Jr.,
FASG) presents Mudge's issue as consisting of two sons and no daughters
(see _The American Genealogist_ 81:18-30, at 24 [24n38 corrects Mudge
[1868],
48]). Elizabeth (Mrs. William3) Carpenter's maiden name is unknown. And
in any case, since the one known record in which even the forename of
William3's wife appears is dated in 1720, it is not certain that she was
the
mother if his children (see Oyster Bay Town Records, 3:429-31).
Jane/Jean Thorneycraft, wife of Silas4 Carpenter (William3, Joseph2,
William1 of Providence), was his first cousin; her parents were William
and
Hannah3 (Carpenter) Thorneycraft. William Thorneycraft was born probably
at
Warwick, Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations (no basis for
date
estimate), and died at Musketa Cove, Oyster Bay, Long Island, between 6
April 1720 (sold land) and 19 December 1728 (will proved), son of Thomas
and
Jean(?) (_______) Thorneycraft of Warwick (by 1647) and Maspeth Kills,
Newtown (now Elmhurst, Queens County), Long Island.
