Barbara,
Thanks for your inquiry.
The information presented in my forthcoming _Register_ article about Providence William
Carpenter's immigration on the _James_ in 1635 is taken from "William1 Carpenter
of Providence, Rhode Island," one of a dozen sketches of mine pertaining to early
Providence and Rehoboth Carpenters; all are available online, where I update them as
appropriate. (They are also on John R. Carpenter's CE 2009 DVD, but those copies, of
course, cannot be updated and in certain cases are already slightly obsolete. I don't
recall for certain, but I'm thinking that the information about Providence
William's immigration on the _James_ is not included in the DVD version of his
sketch.)
Go to "Links to Sketches and Articles . . . ," at
<
http://members.cox.net/jrcrin001/carplink.htm>; scroll down to the Providence
Carpenters subsection (under Carpenter Sketches), and click on the name William1 Carpenter
(he's no. 2 in that subsection), which serves as a hyperlink to the sketch about him.
When the sketch comes up, scroll down to the IMMIGRATION section, which begins on page 2.
This section's first two and a half pages or so present evidence casting doubt on the
oft-repeated claims that William and Elizabeth (Arnold) Carpenter met and married in
England, and that their son Joseph was born there. (I first presented some of these
arguments in an appendix to "Abiah1 Carpenter of Warwick, Rhode Island, and His
Family," _Register_ 159 [2005]:55-68, at 67-68 [hyperlink in Journal Articles section
of "Links to Sketches and Articles . . ."]; the remainder are in the upcoming
article.) Then, beginning at the bottom of page 4, you'll find the information about
Providence William's 1635 immigration on the _James_--confirming that he neither
immigrated with the Arnolds nor married into that family until settling at Providence.
But since the online sketch presents many other additions and corrections to the secondary
literature pertaining to William1 of Providence and his family, you'll want to read
the whole thing.
About the same time that hard copies of the January 2010 issue of the _Register_ are sent
out, it will also be made available to NEHGS members online, in PDF format. Once that
occurs, I'll see that a hyperlink to it is inserted at the bottom of the "LInks
to Sketches and Articles . . ." webpage, in the Journal Articles section. The link
will work not only for NEHGS members but also for non-members.
I ask only that my work be cited by all who incorporate it into their own.
Gene Z.

Hello,
This question is for Gene Z.
I see in the NEHGS eNews for today the following announcement
concerning the next NEHGS Register:
In _The Immigration and Marriage of William1 Carpenter of Amesbury,
Wiltshire, and Providence, Rhode Island_, author Eugene Cole Zubrinsky
argues successfully that "Thomas Carpenter of Amesbury, carpenter,"
who immigrated on the _James_ in 1635, was actually William Carpenter
of Amesbury, carpenter, later of Providence.
Gene, will this article be available anywhere else? Will we need to
join NEHGS in order to see it? My line descends from William of
Providence.
Thank you,
Barbara Carpenter Martin
