Hello,
Here is another Samuel Carpenter of Goshen. This one is the grandson of the previous
Samuel of Goshen.
Samuel Carpenter-14513, son of Samuel Carpenter (Deacon)-5049, son of Samuel
Carpenter-4963 of Goshen, NY.
Phoebe Cortez just sent me new info on Anna Hillerd-14514, this Samuel Carpenter's
second wife. She applied for a widow's pension. It is updates like this that really
help!
Remember to share your data and your sources!
Does anyone have anymore children for this Samuel or a descendantcy line?

1. Samuel Carpenter-14513 was born on 4 Sep 1754 in Goshen,Orange,NY. He died on 24 Mar
1834 in Alexandria,Licking,OH.
Number 1003 in the Carpenter Memorial. Page 162
No family listed. He married an Anna, probably after the Revolutionary war
and moved west.
Samuel enlisted in the Revolutionary war when he was 21 years of age July, 9,
1775 from Goshen, Orange, county, NY. He applied for a pension Sept 27,
1832 when he was 78 years of age; he was then residing in Licking county,
OH. His pension was allowed for ten months & six days service as a private
in the NY troops. A part of the time he served under Captain Denton and
Col. Clinton. His widow Anna also received a pension for the services of her
husband as above.
Samuel the father (#344) is no doubt the Samuel who enlisted as a Sergeant in
Captain George White's Company, 2nd battalion, NY at Fort George on Oct.
13, 1775. We think it is the same Samuel who enlisted as private in Captain
Daniel Denton's company, 3rd NY, commanded by Col. James Clinton, June
28, 1775. This regiment was raised from Orange county, NY. The Samuel who
served as private in Captain John Wood's company of exempt militia in the
county of Orange, NY in the service of the U.S. on different occasions from
July 7, 1778 to July 20, 1779 was probably Samuel the father (#344) also.

The records show in Adjutant General's office, War Dept. that Samul Carpenter served
as an Ensign in
the 4th Penna Reg. Revolutionary War. His name appears on an undated list of Pennsylvania
Officers
appointed by the Council of Safety, pursuant to a Resolution of Congress dated Sept 16,
1776. This list
shows him commissioned Jan 3rd, 1777. Nothing further has been found of record relative to
his services.
See DAR #321982(Cleo's) In the history of the Rehoboth Branch of the Carpenter Family,
it says he
enlisted "when he was 21 years old on July 9, 1775 from Goshen, Orange Co, NY. He

The 1830 Census of St. Albans Twp, Alexandria, Licking Co, Ohio shows Samuel Carpenter,
Sr, a male
between 70-80 (Sam was 76); a female between 50-60 (Anna Hillyar was 56); and a male child
between
10-15, plus a female child between 10-15. (could these be grandchildren or children?) I
also shows a
Samuel Carpenter between 30 & 40; and a Benj Carpenter between 30-40 (Ben was 39)
The book, " Alexandria and St. Albans Township, Licking County Ohio", pub in
1952, page 21 states that
one of the first families to move to St. Albans was the family of Samuel Carpenter, Sr,
from Luzerne
County, Pennsylvania. In the fall of 1805 they came to Rush Creek, Fairfield county, Ohio
where they
remained until the spring of 1809, when they removed to our township and settled on the
farm known as
the Carpenter farm, now the home of the Hubbard boys (now owned by Raymond Tatham.) Upon
this
farm and at the home of Samuel, Sr, was organized the first church (Alexandria Methodist)
and within the
walls of his dwelling was preached the first sermon within the bounds of our township.
St. Alban's township was organized in 1813, and the first election was held at the
house of Samuel
Carpenter, Sr, in the Fall of 1813. Probably the warmest and most exciting election ever
held in the
township was the one for the Justice of Peace in the year 1816 when Sam Carpenter, Sr was
elected.
The strife seems to have been between the Bray section and the Worthington road, and the
contest was
not only warm but bitter and determined, resulting in three elections and as many
contests, and the
defeated party is probably still dissatisfied.
The Licking County Courthouse burnt down in 1869 so copies of marriages, wills, probates,
etc are lost
to us.

HISTORY OF LICKING COUNTY - 554
CHAPTER LXIX.
Samuel Carpenter, sr., from Luzerne county, Pennsylvania, also settled with his family in
this township in
the spring of 1809. He came in 1805 to Rush creek, Fairfield county, where he remained
until he settled
here.
The first church was organized and the first sermon preached in the cabin of Mr.
Carpenter, by Mr.
Bacon, a minister traveling through the country on foot, carrying his saddle-bags on his
arm, in 1810 or
1811. He remained over night with the
590 - HISTORY OF LICKING COUNTY.
Carpenters, and preached this sermon to a small gathering of settlers. Rev. J. B. Finley,
however, says,
in his history of Methodism, that he preached the first sermon in that township, at the
cabin of S.
Carpenter, sr., late in 1810 or early in the following year. If he did so, he failed to
make the same
impression on the younger members of his congregation as was made by Mr. Bacon.
Mr. Carpenter erected the first brick house in the township, in 1821; and died in March,
1834, aged eighty
-one. His son, Rev. Samuel Carpenter, settled on the farm adjoining his father's, and
erected a brick
residence in 1827, the oldest brick building now standing in the township. He was married
to Mercy
Cornell, December 21, 1809, by Rev. T. Harris, of Granville; and had they been married in
the township,
would have been the first; but, though both had been living in the township, and shortly
after the marriage
made this their home, they were married at the house of the bride's mother in
Granville; hence the
marriage of Gideon Cornell to Miss Julia Lobdell, July 17, 1810, was the first marriage
ceremony
performed in the township. Rev. S. Carpenter died in August, 1851, aged seventy-eight
years.
591
The first election was held in the fall of this year (1813) at the house of S. Carpenter,
sr.; the first trustees
elected were Isaiah Beaumont, Peter S. Stephens and David Drake; the first clerk was Noble
Landon,
who named the township after his native place, St. Albans, Franklin county, Vermont. This
privilege was
accorded him in consideration of furnishing four gallons of whiskey to the seventeen
electors present
592
Probably the warmest and most exciting election ever held in the township was the one for
a justice in
the year 1816, when S. Carpenter, sr., was elected. The strife seems to have been between
the Bray
section and the Worthington road, and the contest was not only warm but bitter and
determined, resulting
in three elections and as many contests; and it is safe to say the defeated party is still
dissatisfied.
Samuel married (1-MRIN:6356) Sarah Smith-91771 on 15 Mar 1777 in Presbyterian
Church,Goshen,Orange,NY. Sarah was born about 1760 in ,Luzerne,PA.
They had the following children:
2 M i. Benjamin Carpenter-129526 was born on 2 Jul 1791 in ,
Luzerne, PA. He died on 28 Dec 1853 in Ottumwa, Wapello, IA.
Samuel married (2-MRIN:6355) Anna Hillerd-14514 on 29 Mar 1813 in
Zanesville,Muskingum,OH. Anna was born in 1754 in of,Zanesville,Muskingum,OH. She died
after Jun 1842 in Trenton Twp., Delaware, OH.
