Donna, John R. Carpenter, and Carpenter list members,
This is off the top of my head because all of my genealogy "stuff"
is really in a mess right now because we are trying to get some work done on
our house. Right now I am waiting on the contractor we are trying to use to
show up this morning.
The information about the family of Adam Carpenter that Donna has
provided on my ancestor Adam Carpenter is still not entirely correct.
Adam's obituary in the published Edgefield newspaper items gives a
specific birth date that is somewhere around 1771. His will was written c.
1846. He died somewhere around 1852. I have his estate papers for a
specific deceased by date. He only had four sons that I have found from his
will and estate records and the census. There could have been other
children and maybe some girls who would have died as infants, children, or
young adults. I have only found records of these four: John, William,
Isham, and Dennis.
I did my original Adam Carpenter research beginning in 1967 when one of the
Carpenter great aunt was still alive. At that time anyone could go in the
Probate office in Edgefield and actually handle the old loose papers.
Another Carpenter researcher in California who is a descendant of
Adam's son John, thinks his wife was Elzabeth (spelled various ways but not
Elizabeth from records) thinks that she was a Carter.
Adam's wife Matilda was still living in 1880 in Edgefield. So
Rebecca Carpenter age about 72 on the census was the widow of Reuben
Carpenter, a late in life marriage.
William, Adam's son, was my line through his son Edward/Edmund/Ed
Carpenter. Census gives his wife as Sarah. I have two death certificates
where family members give her name as Sarah Christian. Christians were
there, but I have not been able to fit her in that family. She might could
have been from Georgia, but the census is not always right as we all know.
Adam's son, Isham, was deceased by 1850. His wife, Nancy had
remarried to Francis Marion Coleman. Nancy and Isham had two sons John and
Owen. John died as a child after 1850. I found some estate records for
this minor John. I don't think anyone has ever suggested what her maiden
name might have been.
Dennis Carpenter, son of Adam, married Elizabeth Whitlock. I found
this when I was researching my Whitlock line. Ed Carpenter, above, who
married Emma Frances Whitlock were my great grandparents. They moved over
to Augusta, Georgia, about 1902. I presume that they moved for the children
to work in the textile mills.
I have no idea who the George W. and Rebecca listed as children of
Adam in the message below are because I don't ever recall those names
connected with my Adam's family.
There was another Dennis Carpenter who was in early Edgefield
District, South Carolina. I tracked him through Augusta, Georgia, and on
into Alabama, maybe Montgomery. I don't remember exactly where off the top
of my head. I have often wondered if he was a brother or cousin of my Adam
Carpenter c. 1771-c.1852. He did not appear to be a son of Reuben Carpenter
who married the Butler and was a different Dennis Carpenter from Adam's son,
Dennis.
There is also a mention in an early Edgefield District deed of a
widow Carpenter as an adjoining land owner or something similar. I found
this because someone is publishing the Edgefield Deeds in small paperback
books. I have no idea who this might have been. It is interesting to note
that I have never determined where or how Adam Carpenter obtained the 333
acres of land listed in his estate inventory in 1852.
When it was sold c. 1882 is the only deed record that I found for
it. That and the fact that there is what is supposed to be a cemetery
there. However, it was owned by a lawyer who wanted to charge me for his
services, etc. It has no inscriptions or "modern" markers on it. Just
field stones, etc. I have never been to it, but other locals described it to
me.
These given names of Dennis and Isham seem to have been used a lot
in the families from the north west corner of Cumberland/Moore County, North
Carolina. Matilda/Milly/Milley, the widow of my Adam, was thought to be a
Sheffield. A John Sheffield was a neighbor. He left a will naming a
daughter Milly c. 1794 in Moore County. He had sons, Isham and Dennis, I
think an Everett, etc. All very interesting.
Maybe Caterin Carpenter, supposed widow of Owen said to have been
killed by the British, lived for quite a few years and actually came to
Edgefield. That is by no means a proven fact!!! It does, however, make a
interesting theory of sorts.

Subject: DNA of Owen Carpenter
John,
My father is DNA #78860 in Group 16 South Carolina Carpenters. Adam
Carpenter lived near a branch of our Carpenter ancestors in Edgefield circa
early 1800s. Terry said Adam's obituary stated Adam was born circa 1770 in
Moore County NC where Owen and Temple Carpenter lived. It occurs to me that
if we have DNA from any descendants of the Owen Carpenter line and it
doesn't match my dad's DNA, then we can eliminate them as relatives. Same
with Adam.
QUESTION 1: Do we have DNA from the Owen/Temple/Dennis/Green line?
QUESTION 2: If we have DNA from Owen/Temple/Dennis/Green line, does it come
close to matching our line?
QUESTION 3: Is there any DNA from Adam Carpenter's line of Edgefield SC?
