Below are alternatives to the citation examples posted to this mailing list by John R.
Carpenter on 9/21/10, pertaining to his CE 2009 and my Carpenter sketches.
The first two of John's examples are annotated bibliographic citations, which differ
in format and content from source notes. To cite the CE 2009 in a source note, begin with
the folder, book, article, or document and then cite the CE 2009. For example:
Daniel Hoogland Carpenter, _History and Genealogy of the Carpenter Family in America, from
the Settlement at Providence, R.I., 1637-1901_ (Jamaica, N.Y.: Marion Press, 1901), [page
no.], in _Carpenters' Encyclopedia of Carpenters 2009_, ed. John R. Carpenter (La
Mesa, Calif.: the editor, 2009; data DVD).
Since this mailing list does not support italics, the example above and those below use an
underscore at either end of a title that should be italicized. For "[page
no.]," substitute the actual page number(s) and omit the brackets. If the same
source is cited subsequently, include in the initial, full citation the abbreviated form
you use thereafter. Using the example above: after the book's page number and before
the comma, insert "(hereafter D. H. Carpenter, _Carpenter Family in America_)";
after the DVD's publication information and within the parentheses containing it,
insert "; hereafter _CE 2009_". Of course, in both cases omit the quotation
marks.
To cite an online Carpenter sketch in a source note (the first citation includes the
website and cites its URL, the second cites only the article and its URL):
Eugene Cole Zubrinsky, "William1 Carpenter of Providence, Rhode Island" (2008;
rev. 23 July 2010), [page no.], on Carpenters' Encyclopedia of Carpenters 2008 Update
website (_Links to Sketches and Articles . . . Concerning . . . Carpenter Families of
Rehoboth . . . and Providence . . ._; home page last modified 28 Feb. 2010),
http://members.cox.net/jrcrin001/carplink.htm.
Eugene Cole Zubrinsky, "William1 Carpenter of Newtown, Shalbourne, Wiltshire
(_Bevis_, 1638)" (2008; rev. 31 July 2010), [page no.],
http://members.cox.net/jrcrin001/Wm1_Shalbourne.pdf.
If in the transmission of this message the URLs are automatically transformed into active
hyperlinks, ignore for your own citation purposes the blue font and underscore. Of
course, if you're going to put your work online, you might consider creating
hyperlinks to provide readers with easy access to certain of your cited sources.

You can also cite specific "Carpenter Sketches" in the following manner;

http://members.cox.net/jrcrin001/Wm1_Shalbourne.pdf.
I hope this helps.
