I would encourage all without a link to a known immigrant to take a
look at Nathan Murphy's Indentured Servants website and database.
The reason is the possibility that one of those Carpenter families
(or related names) without an ancestry to a known immigrant MAY have
been an indentured servant.
Briefly, an indentured servant came to the colonies to pay off some
type of debt. Almost all of them stayed in the colonies after their
debt was paid off.
