An indenture was a contract. Those who immigrated to America as indentured servants were
typically single, in their late teens or early twenties, and had contracted to work for a
fixed period—usually three to seven years--in return for their passage and support.
Although an indentured servant usually completed the term of service with the person who
had paid for his/her transportation, the contract was sometimes transferred (1) to a
different master to whom the previous one was indebted or (2) by court order when
maltreatment was proved. Upon completing their respective terms of service, almost all
indentured servants remained in the colonies mainly because they had entered into the
labor contract as the only available means of accomplishing their primary
objective--coming to America.
