"Nothing really new" is right: as is typical of Ancestral File items, this one
is incorrect.
Listed on the same search-results page (FamilySearch website) as the link to the above
data is one to an IGI extraction from the Barbour Collection showing that the birth of
Joshua Carpenter on 24 February 1780 was at New Milford, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, to
John and Elizabeth (______) Carpenter. Confirming this is the
Ancestry.com image of the
Barbour Collection volume of New Milford vital records, page 60:

Unfortunately, not everyone is aware of the extreme unreliability of the Ancestral File
and the International Genealogical Index (the latter's extracted items excepted). It
is ill-advised to repeat data from either source without a strongly worded warning. Every
effort should be made to confirm such information from at least one more-trustworthy
source (ideally a primary one) and then cite it. While it may come as a surprise to some,
the same goes for Amos B. Carpenter's Rehoboth Carpenter genealogy and Daniel Hoogland
Carpenter's Providence Carpenter genealogy. Although their respective error rates are
not as high as those of the Ancestral File and IGI, they are high enough to warrant
considerable caution.
Among the most fundamental requirements of respectable genealogical research are a healthy
skepticism of secondary sources and a willingness to do primary research. Verify, verify,
verify!!!
