Hi
I am seeking parents of John Carpenter, who was born about 16 Jul
1702/1703 in RI and died 1753. John married Elizabeth Grinnell
(1703-1748or1758) between 1720 and 1723 in East Greenwich, RI.
I have determined with help from others that John Carpenter is the not
the son of Oliver Carpenter (1675-1727) and Sarah, because the dates are
wrong and Oliver's John married an Abigail Grinnell not Elizabeth Grinnell.
My John may be the son of Abiah Carpenter (1643-1703) and Mary Redway,
but these parents may be too old to be John's parents. The LDS website had my
John the son of William Carpenter (1631-1703) and Pricilla, but again they
may be too old. The LDS website is not reliable,
any suggestions on where I could find more about the Carpenter family of RI
Thanks
NC
Yes, the dateof birth is wrong for your John as the son of Oliver#54. However,
the ABC "Carpenter Memorial" book lists this John#200, son of Oliver #54 as
marrying "first Elizabeth Grinnell, daughter of Matthew Grinnell, d. 1748, then
Abigail Grinnell second, probably sister of his first wife." the notes are:
"It appears at the time of his marriage to his second wife he made his will, as
his will was made the same year his wife Elizabeth died: probably the conditions
of his marriage. The following is an abstract of his will:---
Dated July 14th 1748
Proven Sept 10th 1753
Wife Abigail Executrix
He gave to his daughter Mary, a bed, etc. and a like legacy to his daughter Sarah
and Diademe. to his daughter Dinah Green, worsted combs etc. To his wife
Abigail, all the goods she brought, and movables that they had gotten together
since their marriage; and a cow and a mare to be kept for her use; wood provided,
with the use of house and a half of the profit of the farm during her life. To
his sons, Cornell and Joseph, all of his apparel, working tools, oxen, cows,
sheep, etc. To his son Jospeh, twenty acres, and to his son Cornell the rest of
the farm."
This John had 7 children, with one set of twins, one of which, Prudence, sister
of Diadema (female), died in infancy.
they are listed as all born in East Greenwich , RI. Since the first was born
July 25, 1721, I suspect that the date that is wrong in the ABC book is the
proper birth date of John Carpenter, son of Oliver #54 and that he may have been
the John you seek born 1702/1703. This would make him 18/19 when his first child
was born according to the data in family number 96 in the ABC book.
I would suspect that the information on this John #200 is correct and that his
birth date in the ABC book is a typo.
