George W. Carpenter, b. ca 1821, Marilla, Erie co, NY
is mentioned in his father's will as living in
Watertown "state of Dakota". His fateher was George
W. Carpenter, b. 22-2-1801, Pittstown, Rennsalaer co
NY, to Jeremiah, b. 28-8-1760, Dutchess Co NY to
Timothy and Elizabeth Anderson Carpenter. Jeremiah
m. Jane Shears. George W. Sr, m. Anne (or Annie)
Foot. When he died on 15 Sept 1882 in Marilla, he
also had a son named Charles who was resident in
Dakota (is this before the Dakotas became states?).
My own great-grandfather, John, b. in Steuben co NY
in 1833 lived in the Dakota territory for a while.
The above information is from Charles Lorain
Carpenter's The Descendants of Timothy Carpenter of
Pittstown, Rensselaer co, NY. The whole group is
descended from both Williams, thru the son of William
of Providence who married the daughter to William of
Rehoboth.

George W. Carpenter, listed in the 1898 Ogle book
of South Dakota
representative citizens as "General George W.
Carpenter", was born in Erie
County, New York son of George W. Carpenter and
grandson of
Jeremiah
Carpenter. He served in 116th New York as a major
but was
quartermaster
general of South Dakota. After the war, he moved
to Fillmore
Co. MN and then
was a pioneer in Watertown, South Dakota (Codington
County).
Is anyone
working on his line???
