Raquel:
Thomas Carpenter II from Albemarle Co., VA, which in 1761 became Amherst
Co and in 1807 became Nelson Co., VA, signed the petition of Dissenters
with his father and brother, John in 1776. This Thomas was married to
Sarah (don't know last name yet) and had 5 children according to
information extracted from "Gilland-Danhauer Family History" by Nadine
Hoaw, 1978, pg 593.
The children were:
1. John b 1773 in Amherst Co, VA
2. William b 1775 in Amherst Co
3. Rebecca b 1777 in Amherst Co
4. Mary b 1779 in Amherst Co
5. *THOMAS (III) b 30 Sep 1781 in Amherst Co, VA and marr to Mary Ann Shook
13 Jun 1801 in Knox Co., TN.
The Amherst Co census for 1783 lists Sarah (widow of THomas II) as head of
a family of 6 whites. Sometime after 1790, Sarah and her children, John,
William, Rebecca, Mary and Thomas accopanied or followed her
brother-in-law, Benjamin Carpenter to east TN on the Holston River, and
settled in Knox Co, TN where she probably died possibly as late as 1836.
Now, as to the John Carpenter from Botetourt, VA by way of Greene KY, that
you referred to in your email, I do not believe this to be a part of the
Thomas and Sarah family.
Thomas had an uncle George b 1763 and another uncle William b 1761. They
are thought to have died in Adair Co., KY but this is the only reference I
have for my Carpenter line being in KY.
You may wish to contact: jwilcox(a)viaduct.custom.net (her name is Sue) as
she has Carpenters from Owen Co.
Sooooooo, it appears that we are descended from the same Thomas Carpenter
III and Mary Ann Shook.
They had 14 children (or should I say that she did, Thomas just planted the
seed and Mary Ann did all the work!) I am descended through the first
born, JAMES (nicknamed Josie) b 13 May 1802 in Knox Co., TN.
Have you done much research on the Carpenter family?
I'm sending a copy of this to Sue in hopes that with some of us working
together, we may connect.
Also sending to the CARPENTER-L list and maybe someone else can jump on.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Karen in San Diego
