Dear all, I have been on this alias for several months now and have read
all the mail sent to the group. I wanted to see what types of requests
were submitted and had hopes that I might see something that related to
my search. So far, no luck but it is time to put up my Carpenter line
story and see if it jogs anyone's ancestral memory.
So, I have seen many queries about various John Carpenters, and thus the
reason for my subject line. My John Carpenter, 2nd GGF unfortunately
has no middle name listed and no birth city, although it seems he was
born in 1825. I am looking for his parents. The only information I have
before the 1850 census of the US is the following story passed down by
family tradition (my grandfather told me this). I apologize in advance
for the long narrative, but it is what I have inserted in the family
bible file under his name.
Does anyone recognize any of the facts or people below, from their
Carpenter ancestry line? His parents may have lived in Ontario, Alberta
or New York State.
The facts would be probably have come from one of John's siblings who
settled in another part of the US or Canada, first part of the 1800's,
and had told about his brother who left and went to sea at an early
age. I would appreciate any hints you may have about searching for
John's parents.
Anyway, here is the story.
JOHN CARPENTER b. ca 1825; m. Rachel Rogers ca 1854; d.
9/18/1873
Family tradition passed down by Karl H. Carpenter, son of John Henry
Carpenter, who was the son of John, states that John Carpenter left the
family farm in Canada when he was 14 (ca 1839) with a horse and five
dollars. Karl thought it was Ontario or Alberta, but he wasn't sure.
John went to sea and settled in Trenton, Hancock Co., Maine. This story
has been passed down.
CENSUS RECORDS
Earliest record found so far of John is in the 1850 census. He's listed
in Trenton, Maine, a farmer in the household of Priscilla Higgins, age
50. Also listed is John Harding, age 36. In this census, John lists
Maine as his birthplace.(We think he was afraid to tell the truth, for
fear of some kind of government reprisal, for unknown reasons)
Other census records:
1860 - John Carpenter 35, farmer birthplace Canada
Rachel E. 29, housewife birthplace Maine
John H. 4, birthplace Maine
William A. 2, birthplace Maine
Lydia C. 1, birthplace Maine
1870 John Carpenter 44, laborer birthplace Maine
Rachel E. 36, housewife birthplace Maine
John H. 14, birthplace Maine
William A. 12, birthplace Maine
Lydia C. 10, birthplace Maine
Byron L. 8, birthplace Maine
Adelbert L. 5, birthplace Maine
1880 Rachel E. 45, widowed birthplace Maine
John H. 25, sailor birthplace Maine
William A. 22, sailor birthplace Maine
Byron L. 16, laborer birthplace Maine
Adelbert L. 15,sailor birthplace Maine
Carrie (sic) 12 housekeeper
In 1900 John H. of trenton gives his father's birthplace as New
York.(This may have been the truth, since he had died and the kids were
US citizens by birth) John's brother Byron gives father as born in
Maine.(????) Both brothers are living in Trenton, Maine.
end of story
Anyone who has an inkling of John's parentage or the best way to
discover it, please reply to me.
Thank you very much!
