Recently I found the following in "The CARROLL COUNTY FAMILILES, These Were
the First, Carroll County, Arkansas", Edited by Jim Lair, 1991. I personally
found no evidence that these CARPENTERS were of my line. But anyone
searching CARPENTERS in NC and AVERY lines might want to find copies of
pages 105 & 106. The book is under copyright and the Historical Society was
not willing to make copies for me. Neither is it indexed. And it was quite
expensive.
In my skimming of those articles, I did not find the specific references you
are seeking in this query, but I did find references to these other sources:
Robert C. Carpenter, "Carpenters A Plenty", The Jim Lair Collection, and the
Research of Bob Graham and Bettye Leathers.
The following quoted material was found on p.105, ""Readers should remember
that the Carpenter Famlies which are traced, were originally German. The
family name was Zimmerman (Zimerman-Zimmermann) which translates as a house
carpenter. A zimmer is German for a room; hence a man who uilds a room. The
Zimmermans were allowed entry into America on the condition that they taken
an oath of allegiance to the King of Englnad, anglicize their names to
English and accept the English language, customs, and government." "Those
members of this historic family who chose Carroll County, Arkansas, as a
place of abode trave their own genealogical heritageback to Hans Zimerman,
alias John Carpenter, who was born circa 1702, in Canton of Berne,
Switzerland. He was united in marriagewith Sarah Salome before 1732, and she
had been born circa 1698, probably in Switzerland. Hans Zimerman/John
Carpenter arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, September 21, 1732, aboard
the ship PINK PLAISANCE. Hans died June 10, 1794 in North Carolina, and yet
he and Sarah were the probabe parents of Peter Zimmerman/Carpenter, who was
born circa 1736-1740 and who became the next link in the Carpenter lineage
that reached into the Northwest Arkansas Ozarks."
The article goes on and it does mention the name Avery as a given name. And
it says that the Historic Avery Family is listed in another section of the
book. I believe refering to "Carpenters A Plenty".
I hope the above information can help someone.
