To share or not to share ... That is the question!
Many Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project members are dismayed not to see their results on the
FTDNA results only page. This page is provided by Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) and omits the 30
odd people who did not test via FTDNA.
This FTDNA page is generated every time it is displayed and it shows your genetic
relationship to other Project members. See:
https://www.familytreedna.com/public/carpenter%20cousins%20%20dna/default...
One of the better explanations of what each FTDNA personal option does is on the
DNA-eXplained – Genetic Genealogy blog. See:
https://dna-explained.com/2015/07/27/family-tree-dna-new-privacy-settings/
One thing missed in the blog is reset to default values. This causes any FTDNA member
options to reset to the current default option of not sharing.
Simply, if you want to see your results on the FTDNA results only page, then modify your
FTDNA personal options settings until your results show up. Please do not forget to do a
page reset to refresh the results on the FTDNA results only page.
Every project at FTDNA has a variation of DNA results sharing. The Blog does show how to
show your results in one project but not the other.
The key is that you have control over what you share with DNA matches within FTDNA and
what is shown at the various FTDNA DNA reports.
Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project members have additional safe guards via the primary web
page and the lineage pages. There we use ID numbers only and list any living family
member as LIVING. In addition, we offer other options using alternate ID numbers and the
even word PRIVATE as desired by our members.
If anyone has questions not covered in the blog or this message, please let me know off
list.
