Hello,
Ron is correct that Y-DNA does not estimate ethnicity. Ethnicity being the
sum total of where all your ancestors came from or identified with. Y-DNA is
a very focused DNA test looking at the Y-Chromosome DNA that is passed from
father to son virtually unchanged over the generations.
Y-DNA testing used by the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project uses the DYS
markers to profile those tested. It is excellent for surname studies. If you
match a surname profile or genetic fingerprint that the genealogy and
genetics has shown comes from Wiltshire, England with the surname Carpenter
(like Groups 2 & 3) then odds are that your paternal male Carpenter
ancestors came from there also. This is similar to how DNA testing
companies create Y-DNA Frequency Maps to show or estimate where the most
distant paternal line male ancestor came from.
When the profile or fingerprint matches others genetically, due to surname
inheritance from father to son, then we examine the genealogy to see if
there is a common ancestor. The combination of genealogy and genetic
testing is genetic genealogy. The process is called triangulation which is
the goal genetic genealogy. See:
http://isogg.org/wiki/Triangulation
However, Deep Ancestry (before the genealogical time period) via Haplogroup
Estimation and SNP testing can provide an idea of where the bulk your
distant ancestors were. At least estimated to have been based on
mathematical and cultural modeling that can change. It is not fact but an
educated guess, so do not take dates, cultures and such without
understanding that the modeling can change. And does change.
For Groups 2 & 3 for example: Haplogroup R1a1 with SNPs M459 or SRY
10831.2 is estimated to be about abt 21,000 years ago. Most people tested
with this Haplogroup and DYS markers come from the Southern Poland, Eastern
Ukraine area of Europe.
Newer SNP (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms) testing actually has found SNPs
not on most current Y-Chromosome charts. FTDNA Big Y shows R1a1a1b1a?? (SNP
YP694) – maybe abt 3,000 years ago. This found mostly in central Europe.
Some say north-central Europe.
The above is taken from my Real Deep Ancestry report which has hyperlinks
at:
http://www.carpentercousins.com/RealDeepAncestry.doc
Several charts associated with the Haplogroups and SNP testing mentioned
above, especially for Groups 2 & 3 are at:
https://www.facebook.com/carpentercousinsYDNA/
The difference from the genealogical time period which is often far less
than 1,000 years to the best of the current SNP (SNP YP694 for example of
about 3k years ago) testing shows a gap of 2,000 years or more. Not helpful
for any type of genealogy or surname study!
I hope this helps.

No, Y-DNA does not estimate your ethnicity.
Consider that your Y-DNA only represents 1 of your 4096 10x
great-grandparents, as an example.
