Hello Carpenter List!
For those that have tested their Y-DNA, the following message was sent to FTDNA Y-DNA
testers. I am posting it here for those who tested at other DNA testing companies who are
also members of the project.
And, if anyone has any questions about Carpenter/Zimmerman Y-DNA testing, please email me
off list.
If anyone has any general questions about Carpenter or Zimmermans, please feel free to
post. I and others will try to help.

Subject: Message from Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project Update – 19 June 2016
Hello Carpenter Cousins!
Recently our main web page and lineage page was updated.
We now have 32 organized Groups! Plus two groups for those non-matching others.
Today we have 360 FTDNA members and 33 members from other DNA testing companies. This is a
total of 393 Carpenter Cousins members.
We have a general discussion, query and help request page with the Carpenter Rootsweb
email list. See the following link to join it or to search past discussions. It can be
slow at times.
http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/c/carpenter.html
We also have a FTDNA X-Site that has only FTDNA tested results. Unfortunately, they do
not allow us to add non-FTDNA member results to this page. See:
https://www.familytreedna.com/public/carpenter%20cousins%20%20dna/default...
There are three (3) items of interest for you below.
A)
A few people have commented/complained that they can not see their FTDNA kit numbers on
this FTDNA page.
The reason for this is the confusion of the FTDNA settings on your FTDNA personal results
page.
Go to the left side of your personal results page and look for Manage Personal
Information. Click on that link.
Under Account Settings you should see …
Personal Information and a blank box to allow you write something about yourself.
Just under: What info can we show to non-matches? - is three options to choose.
1) Full profile: Show all of my profile information.
2) Basic profile: Only show my name, picture and birth year (recommended).
3) Private: Do not show any information.
I have added the 1), 2), and 3) to represent the options which you click one for your
choice.
The problem is that the default is 3) Do not show any information. For the reasons behind
the change and why this is a default, please see:
https://dna-explained.com/2015/07/27/family-tree-dna-new-privacy-settings/
You must choose 1) or 2) to see your results on our FTDNA X-Site and to share your
information.
I use option 2). I am FTDNA Kit # 5734 and that kit can be seen with Group 3.
B)
On a similar vein, I get a lot of matching information. And the sheer number of 12 marker
matches clogs my email. There is a solution for that!
Go to the left side of your personal results page and look for Manage Personal
Information. Click on that link.
Under Account Settings you should see …
Match and Email settings – click on that link.
Scroll down to: Y-DNA Matches and Email Notifications.
Click on yes or no to receive the level of matches you wish to receive. If you have had
other DNA testing, you can change those matching levels also.
C)
Finally is there is something we all try not to think of. This is death. Normal
reasonable people prepare by having some type of life insurance, a will or trust or last
wishes given.
Have we had Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project members who have passed on? The answer is
yes. All of their families, when contacted, wanted to continue supporting our Y-DNA
Project. And to this we are grateful.
But this, in general, posed a problem for FTDNA. They needed a simpler way to designate a
beneficiary.
With FTDNA, there is now a beneficiary section.
Go to the left side of your personal results page and look for Manage Personal
Information. Click on that link.
Then click on Beneficiary Information.
You have a place to enter Name, Phone and Email info of your beneficiary of your FTDNA
account.
Several people have asked if they could put the Carpenter Cousins Administrators to handle
their FTDNA account. And the answer is yes.
For the name, type in: Carpenter Cousins Administrators
That is all you need to enter.
For other beneficiaries fill in the information and let them know your wishes.
~
I want to thank you all for participating in this Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project.
