Dear Linda,
RE: William CARPENTER Capt.-584 b. 23 May 1605 of,Wiltshire,England
and spouse Abigail BRIANT-659 b. 27 May 1604
Shalbourne,Wiltshire,England who both had W.P. in the death place
fields.
W.P. in this case is for Will Proven. I forgot to take it out when I
added the aft 21 Apr 1658 - THE DATE THE WILL WAS WRITTEN, and the bef
7 Feb 1658/1659 - THE DATE THE WILL WAS PROVED (W.P.).
RE: ,,England and similar ...
I standardize all places based on city, county, state. Thus California
with out city or county names comes out as " ,,CA ". I have also used
the two letter state codes for the United States which is the default
country. Occasionally, I use a specific local before the city. Like a
name with Cem., B.G., Hosp., or at home. Sometimes I use a qualifier
like of, near, bef(ore), aft(er) or abt.
This standardization helps tremendously in searching for data.
For places outside the USA, the city, county or shire or
providence, country is used. If more detail is needed, I place them in
the notes. Unless it is a specific smaller local (see above).
I use GEDCOM 4.0 which is the most stable of the different GEDCOM
standards. The most popular is 4.0 followed by 5.5 by the way.
Family Tree Maker uses GEDCOM 5.5 since version FTW 4.4. I have found
that GEDCOM 5.5 causes more errors in transmitting across genealogical
platforms. GEDCOM 5.5 is also more bulky and prone to data transmission
errors. I have learned how to "fix" GEDCOMs that hang up or crash. It
is not easy but it can be done.
I keep the data and notes simple without fancy tags or pictures and I do
not have major errors in sharing data. While it is more work for me to
do, it supplies a better product for the Carpenter CD Project.
I hope this answered your questions.
Sincerely,
John R. Carpenter

Dear John,
Sure, that's fine - In case someone wants to get in touch with me because they have
more information, that will be very helpful.
John, quick question, please? When I loaded the Gedcom into FTM some strange things
happened and I was wondering if you could tell me what "W.P." stands for. For
example, under William Carpenter, b. 1605, it says
d. Aft. April 21, 1658 in W. P., Rehoboth... Hmmmm! W. P.? West Parish??
I'm at a loss!
Then in other places there are strange commas; for example, John Sutton b: Abt. 1593
in ,, England. Am I missing the name of the town and county?
It said there was 75 errors in association with the GEDCOM.
Thanks
Linda
