This particular Benjamin Carpenter has always been a part of the
Upper NC Carpenters. I have been researching Isaac Carpenter of
Halifax/Orange/Wake/Anson Counties for the past 2.5 years. Many
researchers and cousins have been great helpers on this line as if Isaac's
line is solved then all of these Carpenters should fall into place.
Many people have incorrectly placed William Fauntleroy Carpenter as
Isaac's father. It is my belief along with many others that the greater
weight of evidence establishes Isaac's father as William Carpenter (Jr)
of Halifax.
This leads to Benjamin. Isaac's family migrated to Wake in the
late
1780's and early 1790's. Benjamin migrates with them. It is my belief
although I do not have enough evidence at this time to establish this
assertion that Benjamin is either 1) William (Jr's) brother and also
Jonathan Carpenter (Jr.) brother. He could be the younger brother
of William Carpenter (Sr) or Jonathan Carpenter Sr. However, he is
definitely in that Carpenter mix as Jonathan, William and Benjamin
Carpenter were jailed on counterfeiting charges in the July, 1776.
Also Benjamin was sued for having a Bastard Child..I think in Wake.
What is also interesting is that Benjamin apparently "hung out" with
Thomas Carpenter (of Nash Fame) in the Fishing Creek area of Wake.
I have not placed Thomas' line in with Isaac or William, but also have
a strong suspicion that they are related. In other words, Thomas of
Nash and his sons, Burwell, et al. don't appear on any of Isaac's or
his brother William's business, but Benjamin seems to be associated with
both families.
I don't have any information to contribute, but I am interested in these
folks. Evidence points to my ancestor Abigail JORDAN as being in the
Johnston/Wake Co area of NC when she married Unknown CARPENTER about 1765.
By "Unknown" she had sons Reuben, John, and Thomas (in that order).
"Unknown" died about 1780.
