Subject: Rip Van Winkle Look Alike
Hello
I just woke up from quite a long nap and was really amazed at the changes
around me. The noise was horrific and the smells were close to being
unbearable. I climbed a tree to get to a little safety and suddenly I saw
this big long black thing with solid lines and dashed lines and there must
have been a thousand contraptions going hell bent for leather in either
direction. My first thought was, where am I? I still don't know how I got
here or exactly where I came from. After a while I got down out of the
tree
and started walking towards those fast moving contraptions. However,
before
I could get that far, a young man pulled up next to me in what he
called a
Pickup truck and said, "where are you going?" Since I didn't know, I told
him that. He must have figured that I was crazy or something. So he gave
me a ride to his house which was as he said it, just about three miles down
the road. I remember it used to take me the better part of an hour to
travel 3 miles. Why, we got to his place is less than 10 minutes according
to his clock. He introduced me to his family and they all asked how I was,
where I was from, and how old I was. So I blurted out with 1823 as I can
best re-collect and that the place of my birth was on a little farm just
around the turn on the creek in North Carolina. I didn't know any more
than
that. As to my name, I believe it was John Thomas Carpenter, John
after my
father and Thomas after my mother's maiden name possibly. I explained
that
I had gone into the woods to check my still and someone had hit me
over the
head and apparently left me for dead. Somehow I managed to crawl into one
of the many caves nearby and must have went to sleep.
The young man who picked me said that we should just send out a message and
see if anyone might know something about me.
Well here goes: My name is John T. Carpenter and the only thing that seems
to stick in my mind is that I was born in North Carolina in 1823. And if
that is true I must be setting a record. Because I would now be 177 years
old. I've looked in the mirror a few times lately and the person looking
back at me does look pretty old as compared to the people I see round about
these parts. It could be too that I'm just dreaming. But, the young man
who picked me up about four weeks ago would say that I could easily pass
for
being over a hundred.
Anyway, I would like to know more about where I came from and how I got
here. If you have any information about this, please let me know. The
young man's name at the end of this message is the person who picked me up,
thanks.
