Hello Carpenters:
I just re-discovered the 1783 will of Nehemiah Carpenter in Goshen NY
ROBIN, WHAT DATE WAS THE WILL PROVED? SEE NOTES ABOUT THE SAME DEATH
DATE IN 2 RECORDS FROM ABC BOOK 1898. *** CAN YOU QUOTE IT IN FULL?
("late of Jamaica"); actually the NYHS abstract. This is
Nehemiah the
blacksmith. Wife Priscilla; sons Nehemiah and Nicholas; daughters Phebe and
Sally.
In ADCSC, Bachellor has this Nehemiah as the son of the Solomon that
ABC's Carpenter Memorial has as #75. (ADCSC also has the wife Priscilla
being nee Priscilla Smith).
ON PAGE 91 OF THE CARPENTER MEMORIAL (ABC 1898 BOOK) NEHEMIAH IS THE SON
OF SOLOMON (#96 IN THE CM).
ON PAGE 84 OF THE CM - FAMILY #43 IS SOLOMON (#75 IN THE CM) WHO HAS A
SON NAMED NEHEMIAH (#307 - PROBABLY NOT MARRIED BUT LATER FOUND TO HAVE
MARRIED A PHEBE. SEE BELOW.

Nehemiah and Nicolas, and two daughters Phebe and Sally." Dated 16 June
1783.
!A Patriot who signed "The Revolutionary War Pledge" in Goshen, Orange

with his family before the advancing British Army. He joined the very
Pro-American Presbyterian Chruch in Goshen, NY.
!Some records have a Nehemiah being born about 1723, however this

He resided in Walkill and Goshen in Orange county, NY. Probably not
married per the above record. Ancestor File lists a family for him
though.
!WILL: Will dated 1 Dec 1789 and proven 17 Jul 1790. Wills to sister
Hannah, brothers Michael, William, James and Bejamin, nephew Solomon,
eldest son of Michael and William son of William. NOTE: Does not
mention wife or children!
!He enlisted from Goshen in the Revolutionary war, was appointed by Gen.
James Clinton in 1776 as Quartermaster of his regiment. He was in the
assault of Fort Montgomery in 1777. was taken prisoner and exchanged 25
Oct 1780, and was appointed an Ensign. He was honorably discharged 3
Nov 1783.
He was a member of the "Society of the Cincinnati"; his signiture was
on the roll. In a letter from John Schuyler, Secretary of the NY State
Society of the Cincinnati he says:
"While he was a prisoner, being a good writer, he made money in writing
for the British officers. On one occasion he was called upon to get a
drink of water for one of the officers: the officer asked him if the
water was poisoned, and being very thristy himself he asked for the the
cup, and he drank a very heavy drink himself."
It is claimed that the foregoing record belongs to Nehemiah b. 29 June
1757, the son of Nehemiah of Jamaica. The compiler of the Carpenter
Memorial thinks this is a mistake and that it belongs to Nehemiah, son
of Solomon of Goshen, b. abt 1750. It is evident that the latter served
in the war and the State Records refer to him when they speak of
"Carpenter, Nehemiah, Ensign: appointed 29 June 1781, to date from 5
June 1779 when mustered as Ensign: late Quartermaster of the 5th NY
returned from captivity." From official records Nehemiah Carpenter,
Ensign in 2nd NY Regiment: Phillip Cortland, Colonel:Robert Cockran, Lt.
Col., and Nicholas Fish, Major, 1777 to 1780.
The "Revolution Pledge Association" of the Goshen Precinct which
contained Goshen, Chester, Warwick, and a part of Blooming Grove, was
signed by the folowing named CARPENTERs: James, Moses, Benjamin,
Daniel, Samuel, Solomon, Michael and William in 1775. In Cornwell
precinct were the signitures of John, Benjamin, Timothy, Joseph Jr,
John, Elijah, William and John - three Johns. There can be added those
that signed in Salisbury.
!DEATH: Goshen Western Division.
!BIRTH: AF has birth as 1730 and the Carpenter Memorial has 1750.
END NOTES.
But ABC has this Nehemiah (#307) as UNmarried
and childless. This Nehemiah confusion is no doubt involved with
the
massive Solomon confusion.
SEE ABOVE!
I'd appreciate others' views on whether the
Nehemiah-of-the-will is truly
son of Solomon-of-John, or where he fits in.
Robin
P.S. Interesting side note: The will refers to being "...late of Jamaica,
Long Island, but now a resident of Goshen, Ulster County...." This pretty
clearly locates him (geographically) north of the "old county line" dividing
Orange and ulster counties, and therefore not in the village of Goshen proper.
P.P.S. Another interesting note: Being "late of Jamaica," together with
reference to property still owned on L.I., suggests this Nehemiah was a
recent arrival upstate, and therefore NOT the Nehemiah listed as "exempt" in
the 1775 Pledge in OC.

!There is no doubt, if Thompson is correct, that it was this Nehemiah
who moved to Dutchess county, NY, but returned to Jamacia, LI and
settled his father's estate. He was in Westchester county in 1783. He
served in a military company in 1776. He, in his will, mentions son
Nehemiah, daughters Elizabeth, Rebecca and Abagail, and Richard, son of
my daughter Sarah. The will was proved 17 June 1821.
