A cousin of my grandfather's left instructions for his widow to TEAR the
family pages out of the Bible after his death so that no one know that they
were part Cherokee. And one of my aunts dropped 5 yrs from her age early on
so that she could keep teaching. She was apparently a good teacher, because
they kept her on in El Paso until she was 75 (required retirement age was
70, but they thought she was 70) and then had her back for a couple of years
on special license.
Another aunt changed her date of birth because she was about 8 mos older
than her husband. Her son debated which date to use on her tombstone and
decided to go with the one she'd claimed though all of us knew she was a
year older. Probably confuse the hell out of someone someday, but why
should they be different from us?
