I would like to thank Sandra Huemann-Kelly for providing me with Carpenters
from the Frieden's United Church of Christ Cemetary near Mt Crawford,
Rockingham Co VA. I would also like to thank AD Wise for making his copies
of the 1810-1850 Rockingham Co Census available to me; and for loaning the
marriage books below mentioned.
William was the son of George Carpenter Sr and his second wife, Ann
Schulteli. He was born May 28, 1775 and died April 3, 1837 and is buried
in Frieden's. According to "Rockingham Co Marriages, 1778-1850" (compiled
by John Vogt and T. William Kethley Jr and published by Iberian in Athens,
GA in 1984) and "Shenandoah Valley Family Data, 1799-1813 from the
memorandum Book of Pastor Johannes Braun" (translated and Annotated by
Klaus Wust and edited in cooperatoin with Joseph H. Meyerhoeffer and
published by Shenandoah History in Edinburg, VA), William
Zimmerman/Carpenter married Margaret Willberger/Wheelbarger on April 22,
1804 in Rockingham Co. She was the daughter of Mathias/Jacob
Wheelbarger. Margaret was born on November 5, 1782 and died January 23,
1855 and is buried in Frieden's.
William and Margaret Wheelbarger Carpenter had the following children:
1. Jacob b 3-31-1805 d 12-2-1831 He is buried in Frieden's.
2. John b 1806 died 12-22-1890 of old age. The 1850 Rockingham Co Census
gives his wife as Ann. According to her tombstone in Frieden's, she was
born 1-15-1811 and died 11-1-1854. John's will names his wife (second?) as
Mary A.
The 1850 Census gives John and Ann's children as:
a. Edward S. b 1833
b. William T. b 1835 He married Elizabeth S. E. She was born 1840 and
died 4-9-1872 and is buried in Frieden's
c. John W. b 1848. He was named as an heir in his father's "first" will,
but his share was revoked in a later will.
d. Named in her father's will was Margaret A. Beard--she must have been
born after the 1850 Rockingham Co Census was taken.
3. George b 11-1-1808 d 1-19-1890 is buried in Frieden's. The 1850
Rockingham Co Census gives his wife as Sarah; her tombstone says "Sally"
Linn. She was born 8-24-1814 and died July 30, 1885. She is buried in
Frieden's.
Their children on the 1850 census are:
a. Robert b 1832
b. Mary J b 1834 Her tombstone gives her birthdate was 3-13-1835. She
died 4-12-1861 and is buried in Frieden's.
c. Sarah b 1836
d. Ann b 1839
e. Isabella b 1841
f. Eliza b 1844
g. Caroline b 1847
h. Samuel b 8-15-1849 and died 6-5-1868 and is buried in Frieden's.
4. William was born 1816. The 1850 Rockingham Co Census gives his wife as
Sarah. She was born 1819.
a. John b 1839
b. Elizabeth b 1841
c. George b 1843
d. Lucy Margaret b 1845 d 5-20-1847 and is buried in Frieden's
e. Sarah b 1846
5. Samuel b 1820 and died 4-7-1905 and is buried in Frieden's. He married
Leannah Showalter on 11-28-1842 in Rockingham Co. She is the daughter of
Jacob and Sophia (Safley) Showalter. Leannah was born 9-30-1823 and died
1-15-1897 and is buried in Frieden's. I have more on the Showalters;
Leannah's brother, Henry, is a direct ancestor on my father's side. Their
children in the 1850 Rockingham Co Census are:
a.William b 1844
b. David Henry b 1846 d 5-18-1851 and is buried in Frieden's
c Sophia b 1848
d Mary b 1849
6. Elizabeth b 1822 d 4-14-1862 of consumption. I found her on the death
records for Rockingham Co recently run on
Ancestry.com. She was not still
in her mother's household on the 1850 Census because she was already
married, but she is listed by age group in the earlier censuses. According
to "Rockingham Co Marriages, 1778-1850" (compiled by John Vogt and T.
William Kethley Jr and published by Iberian in Athens, GA in 1984) she
married Joseph Altaffer on 11-15-1841. The minister was John W. Stine.
7. David was born 4-17-1824 and died 11-30-1831 and is buried in Frieden's.
8. Henry was born 6-22-1826 and died 7-31-1906 and is buried in
Frieden's. His wife listed on the 1850 Rockingham Co Census is given as
Lucy she was born 6-1-1828 and died 8-16-1892 and is buried in
Frieden's. There is the possibility that her maiden name was Pence or
Roller, but I have not researched it further.
So, these are the children of William and Margaret (Wheelbarger) Carpenter
as far as I know. They're not of my line but they don't seem to have been
researched and I thought that it might help keep them straight from the
descendents of William's older half-brother George Carpenter Jr--since they
were all in Rockingham Co, VA at the same time. I don't know that I'll
research them any further because I want to concentrate on some of my
lines--especially the children of George Carpenter Jr.
