Dear John,
Thanks for your help and information you sent. I read with great interest
the attachment. Quite a bit of information to assimilate!
I found your note at #6 referring to the ancestral file info on CHC and his
wife Marian Hotchkiss that did almost completely match the CHC I am
searching for to be exciting. From where did that info come? I did a search
there, but didn't find a match.
If you look at the 1840 census data in your notes, it appears that Marian
(age 15-20) was listed in his household at approximately his age (20-30),
but in the 1850 census, she is listed as Nancy at age 30. Could this be an
error in the 1850 census records (after all, there is a child named Nancy
listed in both censuses)? Another discrepancy is Charles' age - listed as
39 in the 1850 census and as 42 in the 1860 one. Or could there have been
more than one Charles Carpenter in Crawford County, PA at that time? It
seems unlikely.
Although I'd like to believe that the Charles Henry Carpenter you have
documented is my Charles H. Carpenter, I am not now convinced that this is
the same person I'm looking for, but I am much closer than I was yesterday,
thanks to you.
There are similarities that lead me to believe that these CHC families may
be related, if not the same one. Abner Carpenter's move from the
Brattleboro, VT area (the traditionally accepted home of my family) to Guys
Mills, PA which is in the same area of northeastern PA that my CHC and his
descendants are from.
My information is largely based on research done by a distant relative of
mine, Dorothy Eldred, whose records were unfortunately destroyed following
her death. A second cousin of mine has collected copies of letters written
by Dorothy's to her relatives that describe her research in progress. I have
gotten information from these letters, and from talking to my father and his
sisters.
I did find an apparent inconsistency in the notes, however, that does not
affect my search, but may have some impact on your project. Near the end of
the section headed by THIRD GENERATION (FINAL VERSION) it states:
Abner also married (2) Mary a widow-41883 about 1836. Mary was born about
1787.
They had the following children:
13 F xii. Ella CARPENTER-41773 was born about
1836 in Crawford, PA.
Ella married (1) Sam RADLE-42184. Sam was born about 1836.
+ 14 F xiii. Mittie CARPENTER-41657 was born 15
Feb 1844 and died 18 Jan 1930.
However if you look at the information following the next heading of Second
Generation you find the following that seems to contradict the info above
and that which is prevalent throughout the notes:
2. Ezra CARPENTER-36972 was born about 1810 in Brattleboro, Windham, VT
and was christened about 1820/1825 in of Guys Mills, Randolph Twp.,
Crawford, PA. He died 28 Sep 1850.
He was married to Mary Barlow before 1840 in Guys Mills, Randolph Twp.,
Crawford Co. PA. 1840 census shows a 30-40 yr woman, probably Mary Barlow,
a young widow - young enough to have two daughters. Mary Barlow was born
bet 1800 and 1810.
Ezra married (1) Mary-42154. Mary was born about 1805/1810.
NAME: Referred to as Mary Barlow, but she was a widow. Maiden name unknown.
Ezra and Mary had the following children:
15 F i. Ella CARPENTER-42177 was born about
1841 in Randolph Twp., Crawford, PA.
16 F ii. Mittie CARPENTER-42178 was born
about 1845 in Randolph Twp., Crawford, PA.
These children's names are the same (although their reference numbers are
different) as those listed as Abner's children from his second marriage to
Mary Barlow (the same woman?).
Thanks again for sharing your research. It has certainly helped and
encouraged me. I would like to have a GEDCOM file when you find time.
Cordially,
Peter

Dear Peter,
Your ancestor has two birth dates and has some confused entries. Please
review the attached file and let me know what you think. The notes also
contain other researchers.
When you are ready I can send the ancestry via text or GEDCOM in
exchange for helping me out on this line.
