Dear Bruce,
I heard back from Dr. Ross. (see below) He referred me to Brian
Tompsett's web page in the UK.
I wrote a note to Brian Tompsett but I believe I got an automatic
reply. (see below)
By the way his web page is fantastic!

I am afraid someone who speaks French needs to look at the older
records. Carpenters (Charpentier, Carpentiers) were minor French
nobility who were not often mentioned.
Step by Step,

Dear Mr. Carpenter,
I don't think I can be of much help with minor French nobility. You should
try Brian Tompsett's Royal and Noble genealogy at
http://www.dcs.hull.ac.uk/public/genealogy/royal/catalog.html. If he
doesn't have it, I hope you can read French, since that is probably what
all the sources will be in.
I have been collaborating on the English translations of Histoire de Belgique
but the work is not finished or indexed. It is a part-time effort.
Best wishes,
Kelley Ross
