I received an inquiry about Zachariah Carpenter of Harrison Co TX and
thought I would post my reply in case there are any descendants out there.
ZACHARIAH CARPENTER b. 1805 GA - d. 1871-1879 Harrison Co TX.
I believe he is the son of my 4th great grandfather Thomas Carpenter c.1785
who lived in Henry Co GA.
NOTE: Everything I have on Zach being related to my line and his wives &
whereabouts are pure speculation based on some real facts and some
circumstancial evidence.
MY THEORY: (all dates are "circa.")
Zachariah (middle possibly Lee) Carpenter was born 1805 in Lincoln Co GA to
Thomas Carpenter. He was in Henry Co GA where he was listed in a FiFa Suit
with his father and brother in 1838. Siblings were: Thomas M, James Warren,
Elizabeth, Abigail, Rueben L, and three other unknown children. Zach married
first Miss Unknown and they had 5 children: James Warren 1833 (named after
his brother), Sarah M 1835 (possibly named after his brother's wife),
Abigail 1838 (named after his grandmother), Mary J. 1840 (after his mother),
Rebecca Frances 1840. Wife one died about 1841. Zach lived in Harris County
in 1840 & 1850.
Zach married second Margaret JORDAN in 1842 Harris Co GA where he lived and
belonged to the Mason's Grand Lodge of GA. Margaret was the probable
daughter of Rev. John Chauncy Jordan b1784 SC/GA - d.1866 Clay Co AL [he was
buried next to Zach's brother James Warren]. Margaret & Zach had a daughter
Elizabeth born about 1843. Margaret died by 1853. In 1853, Zach's brother
Thomas M Carpenter died leaving orphans. Zach may have taken in two of his
nephews, Lewis & Zachariah Carpenter (the younger).
Zach then married Susan A. (Carver) Craver in Harris Co in 1854. They moved
to Harrison TX by 1858. There was a Phillip Craver b. 1790-ish and a Charles
Craver b.1816 who left Harris Co GA and moved to Harrison Co TX about the
same time. I presume they are relatives of Susan. They can be found on
www.findagrave.com with photos of their tombstones. Susan and Zach had three
children: N.A. 1855 (probably Nancy Ann), Charles T. 1858, Henry O.A. 1859.
In the 1860 census they listed as:
1860 TX, HARRISON,
Z. Carpenter b.1808 GA,
S.A. 1820 NC,
N.A. 1855 GA,
C.T. 1858 TX,
H.A. 1860 TX
**L.1850 GA & **Z. 1848 GA "MAYBE Lewis & Zach the orphans of Thomas M.
Carpenter?""
In the 1870 census they are listed as:
TX, HARRISON,
"Lee" 1806 GA, * Lee could be a mistake for Zee
Susan 1818 NC,
Nancy 1855 GA,
Charles 1857 TX,
Henry O. 1859 TX.
You can see it is the same family. Zach's son from his first marriage, James
Warren Carpenter b.1833 stayed behind in GA and moved to Calhoun Co AL which
was near where his Uncles Thomas M & James Warren had lived. Another Uncle,
Reuben L Carpenter married Emily GARRETT and James Warren (1833) married
Emily's sister Nancy Jane GARRETT.
Zach's daughter Sarah M Carpenter (1835) married Edmund Truett and moved to
Randolph County which was her Uncles Thomas M and James Warren Carpenter had
lived. Sarah's first son was named William Zachariah Truett.

I also found graves of the Carpenter descendants on
www.findagrave which
identify Zach & Susan's son H.A. as Henry Alan O. Carpenter buried in New
Mine Cemetery in Camp Co TX. There is info on his wife and children as well.
In the 1910 census, Charles & Henry lived next to one another and they are
next to W.T. Carpenter b.1884. W.T. could be a son of either one, however I
think the age and place of births for his parents point to him being a child
of Henry's by a first wife. Possibly. W.T Carpenter was buried in Tarrant
TX.
I sure hope all my hard work and tons of hours researching Zach pan out to
be true. If this is the line you are interested in PLEASE let me know. If
I am wrong, I will hate it as I will have to start all over but the names,
dates, places sure add up to what I have transcribed above as "my theory."
