CARPENTER Descendant Search
The Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project - Group 16 is looking for descendants of Nathaniel
Carpenter-60326 (b. abt 1700 of, Mt Tavy,,Devonshire,England, UK - formerly, of,
Launceston, Cornwall, England, UK d. abt Mar 1796 Richmond Town, King & Queen, VA) who
married Ann Bushrod-60327 (b. abt 1710 of, Westmoreland County, VA d. abt 1792 of or in,,
King & Queen, VA) about 1727. This Carpenter line descends from John Carpenter, Esq.,
born in England presumably in the mid-1600s and once of at Launceston, Cornwall.
If you have them in your ancestry or are related to them from England I would like to hear
from you.
Y-DNA is passed from father to son virtually unchanged over the generations. A DNA test,
with paper lineage documentation, is an ideal way to confirm common ancestors. It can also
disprove genetic relationships very effectively.
The Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project was started in September of 2002 and now has over 250
members from various DNA testing companies. This project has re-constructed ancestor Y-DNA
markers of several major groups of Carpenters through triangulation using paper trail and
genetic (Y-DNA) testing.
Group 16, called the South Carolina Carpenters, is a group of genetically related
Carpenters whose Carpenter ancestor is believed to have died during the American
Revolutionary War about 1780/1782. It is "possible" that Group 16 ancestors may
be related the Nathaniel & Ann (Bushrod) Carpenter line. Group 16 is looking for a
living male Carpenter with a paper trail of this line for Y-DNA testing to confirm or to
disprove this theory. That person may be asked to participate in Y-DNA testing.
For more information on Nathaniel & Ann (Bushrod) Carpenter line, see the lineage
below. Other unique names include Coryndon Carpenter & William Fauntleroy Carpenter.
If you are a descendant of Nathaniel & Ann (Bushrod) Carpenter who died in King &
Queen County Virginia, please contact me with your Carpenter ancestry paper trail. You may
be the person selected for a free Y-DNA test.

The following was provided by Terry Lee Carpenter in July 2011.
John Carpenter, Esq., born in England presumably in the mid-1600s, an ironmonger at
Launceston, Cornwall, who wrote his will on 2 Mar 1705, probated 9 Jul 1714. He married
Mary Spry, who wrote her will on 31 Oct 1717, probated 16 Jan 1717, sister of William
Spry, of Tavistock, Devonshire, England. Children:
1. Hannah Carpenter, born by c1696, married on 20 Oct 1711 in Launceston, Cornwall, to
John Bolt. Children:
1a. John Bolt, born by c1717.
1b. William Bolt, born by c1717.
1c. Mary Bolt, born by c1717.
2. John Carpenter, born by c1696, father of Mrs. _?_ (Carpenter) Hele of Kingston House;
so he had at least one child.
3. Mary Carpenter, born by c1696, married the Reverend Charles Porter.
4. Nathaniel Carpenter, born c1696-1702, died c1765 in Launceston, Cornwall, England,
married on 17 Jun 1729 at St. Thomas the Apostle in Exeter, Devonshire, England, to
Sibella Luxmore and had children:
4a. Coryndon Carpenter, born 1731, died 23 Apr 1776, resided in Launceston, Cornwall,
married on 18 Jun 1768 at St. Clement Danes, Westminster, London, England to Elizabeth
Luxmoor, annotated as "of Launceston". He had no children, and left an annuity
of £50 to his brother Nathaniel and devised two farms at Webworthy and North Treglan,
Cornwall, England, to his executors in trust for sale to benefit his brother Nathaniel
Carpenter of King and Queen Co. VA or Nathaniel's children in America, or in default,
to his widow and three sisters.
4b. Sibella Carpenter, born c1732, christened on 11 Mar 1732 at Launceston, died 1792,
unmarried.
4c. Nathaniel Carpenter, born c1732-1734 in England, died in Apr 1778 in VA, was
called Dr. Nathaniel Carpenter in some records. On 24 Aug 1756 the surveyor of Lancaster
Co. VA, returned a plat for 164 acres of land in the Parish of White Chapple, Lancaster
Co. VA adjacent to Nathaniel Carpenter and others -- Morattico, in Lancaster Co. VA and
Richmond Co. VA, was the site of settlement of a number of earlier Carpenter generations,
including a John Carpenter in 1696. Nathaniel Carpenter was stated to be a
"Devonshire gentleman", was collector of royal fees for the Rappahannock River
district as early as 1764, and was a Council member in King and Queen Co. VA on 15 Dec
1769. Between 1 and 16 Mar 1768 in VA he married to Ann Bushrod 'Nancy'
Fauntleroy; she was reportedly a daughter of Bushrod Fauntleroy. Anne married second on
12 May 1781 in Middlesex Co. VA to Robinson Shackelford. She had moved to Caswell Co. NC
by 1796, and possibly died c1798 in NC, though one record states she had died by Mar 1796
in which month administration of the estate of "Nathaniel Carpenter of King &
Queen Co., VA" was granted "to the son William Fauntleroy Carpenter, the relict,
Ann Bushrod Carpenter, having died." Her marriage to Shackelford is supported by a
court document recorded in Richmond VA in 1789: "Ro. Pollard, D[eputy], advertises a
suit in chancery at the Court held for King and Queen County of Beverly Roy, acting
executor of John Corrie, against...executors Robinson Shackelford, Anne Bushrod his wife,
administrator of Nathaniel Carpenter, and Coridon Carpenter, heir of the said Nathaniel.
Ordered that the land and premises in the bill mentioned, after being advertised, be sold,
the court being satisfied that Robinson Shackelford conveyed to the complainant all his
rights and that Anne Bushrod, his wife, relinquished her rights. Ordered that Coridon
Carpenter, eldest son and heir at law of Nathaniel Carpenter, do by his guardian convey to
the purchaser his right and interest, to be by him confirmed on his attaining his
twenty-first year of age". Children of Nathaniel and Anne Bushrod (Fauntleroy)
Carpenter:
4c1. Corydon Carpenter, born c1770, eldest son. He was under age in 1789. He
married c1790-1795 to Lucy M. Dixon, daughter of John Dixon of Gloucester Co. VA, and
resided in Gloucester Co. VA. When he reached the age of 21 in 1792 he went to England to
receive his share of £1,150 left to his father by his uncle Corynden Carpenter, and
concluded an agreement dated 7 Aug 1792 for his brothers who were still under age in
America to claim their shares. He returned to VA, where on 20 Aug 1794 he was listed as a
member of the 14th Brigade Artillery Company. On 5 Jul 1795 and 3 Jul 1797 he resided at
North River, Mathews Co. VA; in 1796 in a letter to his mother, he mentioned a daughter
born to him who lived only 10 days. He subsequently sailed for England in 1797 and was
"never heard from again", presumed died "in or since 1797 at sea."
His widow married second Jasper Clayton and resided in Gloucester Co. VA. Known child:
4c1a. (Daughter) Carpenter, born c1796, died at age 10 days.
4c2. William Fauntleroy Carpenter, born c1774-1775, went to England in 1795 and
received his share of his uncle's estate. In Mar 1796 he was named by the Prerogative
Court of Canterbury to be administrator of his father's estate after the death of his
mother; she had removed to NC but had apparently not died in 1796. He became involved in
a dispute with fellow Virginian James Pride about American independence and was
subsequently killed in a duel with Pride in London on 21 Aug 1796 -- "Died - Mr.
William Carpenter, on Sunday, August 21, 1796, in a duel with Mr. John Pride. Both are
Americans, Carpenter being from Essex County, Mr. Pride, from Amelia County. The duel was
fought in Hyde Park, London." The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography notes
"Dr. Nathaniel Carpenter of Devonshire came to VA before the Revolution and settled
in King and Queen Co. In 1796 his son, William Fauntleroy Carpenter, and John Pride were
in London. In the Gentleman's Magazine for 1796 is a notice of the death, on Aug. 12
at the age of twenty-one, of William Fauntleroy Carpenter, son of a Devonshire gentleman,
who had removed to Essex Co. VA, where at the time of writing young Mr. Carpenter's
mother and three brothers resided, and whence he had recently come to England to receive a
fortune bequeathed him many years before by his uncle, Coryndon Carpenter, Esq., of
Launceston, Cornwall. He was killed in a duel with Mr. John Pride, aged about twenty-five
years also a native of VA. The duel took place in consequence of a conversation at the
Virginia Coffee House in which Carpenter condemned the members of Congress who had opposed
the treaty with England and Pride took the other side. The meeting took place in Hyde
Park at 5 paces and Carpenter was shot in the side and died the next day. He begged that
Pride and the seconds might not be prosecuted and was, says the magazine, "an
uncommonly fine young man." He was a bachelor; his estate administration was granted
on 16 Feb 1797 in London to Charles Carpenter, "a relative," presumably his
uncle Charles.
4c3. Nathaniel Carpenter, born c1775-1776, went to England in 1797 to receive
his share of his uncle's estate and administer his brother's estate, died c1805,
presumed lost at sea; a bachelor.
4c4. Bushrod Carpenter, born c1776-1778. There is no known record of an
application for his share of his uncle's estate in England. He was "not heard
of" and presumed deceased by his English relatives after 1794, however, he wrote a
letter to his mother dated 6 Jul 1797. He may have returned to VA from NC in the early
1800s and then gone to England to live out his life: a Bushrod Carpenter "late of
Virginia" was granted administration of the estate of Coryndon Carpenter, brother, in
Nov 1840 in Canterbury, England. However, another report states that Bushrod Carpenter
died in 1794 and limited administration of his estate was granted to Samuel Steward in
England in Nov 1840. There is some unreliability in published records about these
individuals, due to attempts by lawyers to involve themselves in negotiations for
settlement of the estate by several American Carpenter families [TLC].
4d. John Carpenter, born c1735-1736, baptized on 24 Jan 1736 at Launceston, Cornwall,
England, "son of Nathaniel Carpenter."
4e. Ann Carpenter, born possibly c1736-1740, married William Rowe and had twelve
children, died in 1812.
4f. Charles Carpenter, born c1741, christened 30 Nov 1741 at Launceston, died 1 Mar
1831 in London, granted administration of William Fauntleroy Carpenter's estate in
1796; no children.
4g. Maria Carpenter, born c1744, christened 5 Nov 1744 at Launceston, died 1792,
married on 27 Jul 1771 at Plymouth St. Andrew, Devon, UK, to Admiral Richard Boger and had
three children:
4g1. Maria Boger.
4g2. Corydon Boger.
4g3. Turcliffe Boger.
