Donna,
For repositories in the area you plan to visit; to familiarize yourself with
townships' parish locations, the districts, counties, and circuit-court districts and
changes thereof; and to gain other useful background knowledge, read the South Carolina
chapter in Alice Eichholz, ed., _Red Book: American State, County, and Town Sources_, 3rd
ed. (Provo: Ancestry, 2004), viewable online at
<
http://www.ancestry.com/wiki/index.php?title=South_Carolina_County/Distri...;.
(The Archives, Libraries, and Societies section fails to mention Guilford College [in
Greensboro], whose Hege Library's Friends Historical Collection contains many volumes
and films [not all held by FHL] of original South Carolina Quaker records. Hinshaw, vol.
1, includes abstracts of South Carolina Quaker records, but not all are accurate.)
FHL has a research outline for South Carolina:
<
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/RG/frameset_rg.asp?Dest=G1&Aid...;.
See also <
http://archives.sc.gov/genealogy/guidesgenresearchsc.htm>.
After reading at least the _Red Book_ chapter and FHL research outline, you might check
the FHL catalog for films to order through your local Family History Center and view
there. You can save yourself a lot of time and expense by exhausting all the appropriate
films before embarking upon, or considering the necessity of, on-site research.

Hello,
I live in Nevada and plan a Sept or Oct trip to SC. I want to search for old records for
my family tree.
But I don't know which libraries will be close or which ones hold the records I
seek.
HERE IS WHAT I WANT TO LOOK FOR:
Surnames: Carpenter, Jordan, Moffatt ~ Years: 1700 - 1850
SC Area: Along the Savannah River
Edgefield, McCormick, Abbeville, Dist 96 Pendleton, Pickens, Spartanburg
..... and early Craven (Horry), Berkley

I will be looking for Wills, Land, Marriage & American Revolutionary type records.
The three families lived in SC circa 1750-1770s (maybe earlier) then moved to
Wilkes/Oglethorpe County GA. Suspect they were in Abbyville/Dist 96 area. They had land in
Lincoln Co GA & across the river in Edgefield Co SC circa 1805 to 1820s.
I will be staying in Ware Shoals SC (near Greenwood) but can make arrangements to stay a
few days elsewhere.
Which library would house the old docs that I will be looking for?
Thanks for any help,
Donna Cuzze
