In reply to Ray Carpenter's inquiry:
While it's remotely possible that William Carpenter (1689–1789) of the Oxfordshire
parishes of South Leigh and Witney is related to William1 Carpenter (c1675–) of the parish
of Shalbourne, Wiltshire, it is a highly speculative proposition. Records indicate that
the latter man, the elder of the two William Carpenters who sailed to Massachusetts on the
Bevis in 1638, was born between about 1574 and about 1576. A William Carpenter was
baptized in the parish of Great Coxwell, Berkshire (now in Oxfordshire), on 5 May 1576.
Evidence that this is more than coincidence has not been found. But since Great Coxwell
is only about 30 road miles north of Shalbourne, further research is warranted. South
Leigh and Witney are about 15–20 road miles northeast of Great Coxwell. All we have,
therefore, are the same name and distances from a central location (Great Coxwell) that
are certainly negotiable but not all that close—nothing else. Considering that the
shorter distance is between Great Coxwell, on the one hand, and South Leigh and Witney, on
the other, I would focus on trying to identify the Carpenters in and between those
vicinities.
It should be kept in mind that an occupational surname such as Carpenter was adopted
independently all over England, with no necessary relationship whatsoever among its
bearers.
