I was looking through co. Hampshire history and found much that was
interesting. The owner of much of the Wherwell land by 1605 was Lord DeLa
Warr, a
sympathetic figure to the Puritans. The crown literally takes all his land
revenue in 1605. He and all his Wherwell tennants were presumably
in straights. At this point he actively becomes involved with
colonizing Virginia. The state of Delaware is named after him or family
member.
He himself dies on ship off coast pf VA or New England. Rev. Bachilier was
connected
to him as well as Richard Dummer.
All these events transpired at the time of Rehoboth William's birth. The
father
might have had connections to them. Odd that he comes to MA with son
and then disappears. Did he have connections to VA? Did other family
members?
One matter that I could never accept was the listing of Wherwell as a
temporary
residence for the Carpenters. When people ask me where I am from I never
give them
one of my MANY temporary addresses. I tell them where I was born.
The Carpenter family history was a long one in Hampshire with a well-to-do
Thomas c. 1500 in Basingstoke. Plus other references.
