From Gene:
"Richard Dummer, for example, who had already
established
himself in Massachusetts and was returning there with his family, is listed
as "of New England." This, of course, was not his birthplace."
In the the Bevis record below, Dummer's Bishopstoke
origin (connection) is cited. At
http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/1339/littlefield/TheBevis1638.html
"Dummer, Richard 40 ("gentleman, of New England") of Bishopstoke, county
Hampshire ".
From Gene:
"from at least 28 April 1625, when he
married Abigail Briant there, until at least 20 April 1637, when son Samuel
(the first of two of that name) was buried there--and probably until at
least
25 January 1637[/8], when an unidentified Alice Carpenter was buried there."
The problem for me is the father. Yes, William jr, lived in Shalbourne for
the time
you suggest. Of course, the Carpenters could have lived anywhere in the
radius of Wherwell
and still have been the tenants or supporters of Baron Delaware (De La
Warr). My point is that
these historical events and personages need to be more carefully thought
out. No one
to my knowledge has ever mentioned the good Baron. He and his activities
were central to events in the area.
Another speculative point is that a William Carpenter, with a wife Alice and
daughter
Alice, went to Virginia in 1623 or about.
Suspicion is often a good point to begin investigation and I am supicious of
connections
between all these events and individuals.
