I note (very belatedly) a reference in R&C's "History of Orange
County"
(p.430) a reference to "...Messrs. Wisner and Carpenter were recommended
(for a govt contract)" and that "...the business was to be conducted at
Carpenter's saw-mill at what is now Salisbury."
Wisner is pretty clearly Henry Wisner. Does anyone here know (or have
good surmise) which Mr. Carpenter this was?
On a present day map of Orange County (NY), there is a village called
"Salisbury Mills" way at the eastern end of Blooming Grove. By name, this
seems maybe the place that R&C refer to, but it's awfully far east for what
was supposed to be in Wallkill. Was there once a Salisbury somewhere west
of Goshen?
Elsewhere, R&C refer to "The Josey Sayre house" at Carpenter's Mill.
Does anyone know where is/was the Josey Sayre House?
Separately, R&C say the wife of Israel Wickham (b.1741) was Elizabeth
Carpenter, daughter of Joseph Carpenter of Goshen. This Joseph may have
been ABC #365 who had a daughter Elizabeth (#1039), but ABS suggests she
married a Thomas Barnes. Any info here?
thanks for any help.
