Thanks for John's input. That Bevis list Horwell could be Harwell
should most certainly be kept in mind. This particular area is problematic
for historical research do to county boundary changes. Harwell was in
Berkshire but is now
in Oxfordshire.
Historically, geographically and economically this was a discreet area.
Each of the major
market towns were the centers surrounding village activity. Thus Harwell
in present Oxfordshire was within the greater sphere of Hungerford.
Lesser sons from Hungerford populated the surrounding villages.
The shops and brokering facilities of the market town
served the surrounding villages. Wool grown in Harwell was made into cloth
in Hungerford. Hungerford itself was within the orbit of Reading and
Newberry. There should be a traditional English term for this area.
I recall seeing something like "Upper Thames and Kennet Valley area".
