Subject: [CARPENTER] Hungerford
After a brief visit to the University of Washington library
the following was found (Victoria History, Berkshire, vol. 4).
The economy of Hungerford was
centered about Hungerford Manor which was an important manor within
the Duchy of Lancaster. From the early 1600s those economically
involved in the manor attempted to gain a charter
of incorporation, finally succeeding in 1613. One of the seven or so
individuals named in the charter was Thomas Carpenter. Those pushing
for the charter were representives of families that had long
historical economic interest in the manor. Another Thomas
Carpenter was noted in Hungerford in 1525. We can assume that this
clothier
Carpenter group raised sheep for wool on the estate, and had done so
back into the 1400s. This would have made them a very prosperous family
group with economic and probable family ties radiating to connected areas
such as Great Bedwyn and Shalbourne.
The other clothier Carpenter group documented for the town of Reading from
the late 1400s should have also had connections to major manor land, and
possibly the
Hungerford manor itself. This awaits investigation. The Thomas Carpenter
of Reading d. 1520 while the first Hungerford Thomas Carpenter was living
in
1525.
The Carpenter signers of the Virginia Charter seems to have involved a
mistake
by those who transcribed it for the internet. In the official books
published
there were two William Carpenters who signed as well as a Thomas
Carpenter.
At least three other West (Lord Delaware's family) family members
signed.
