While reading the Victoria History of Somerset I learned more about
the following previously posted:
"E 134/30Eliz/Hil19 Thomas Carpenter, Ann Carpenter (son and daughter of
Robert Carpenter). v. Robert Oland: Lease of the manor of Wellington
(Somerset), obtained by defendant and others, patentees, and their
composition and agreement with tenants of said manor, and grant of lease by
said patentees to John Berry, &c. 30 Eliz 1587
E 134/32Eliz/East10 Robt. Berry, Robt. Carpenter, John Arnold. v. Robert
Oland: Manor of Wellington (Somerset). [The names and possessions of John
Berry, John Welkes, a grant of the manor by late Queen Mary to Christopher
Baynham, John Parsons, Richd. Hayne, Wm. Giffard, Walter Andrews, Jas. 32
Eliz 1590 "
In 1548 Edward Seymour thhe Duke of Somerset gained control of Wellington
in Somerset. It follows that Robert Carpenter gained his interest in the
manor
from Seymour and then lost it due to the Dukes troubles. We had seen the
other
probable connections of Berkshire Carpenters to the Duke and his changing
fortunes.
Wellington itself was a cloth producing center, along with Bath in Somerset.
Thus
Carpenters are connected to both places. Wellington was extremely important
in
Somerset in the 1500s economy. We can conclude that the Carpenters, and the
Arnolds, were doing very well until the cloth-trade depression of the early
1600s.
The following are records of Someset Carpenters. It is interesting that none
seem to
predate 1550, which coincides with Edward Seymour's date above.
