That's what I thought. Am I correct in assuming they are somehow related
given that they each have the same middle name? My main interest started
with attempting to identify Alonzo Carpenter of Delaware County, Ohio who
was born somewhere in New York around 1812. My Great (x 3) Grandfather,
Lewis Carpenter, was also born in New York around 1808 and was practically
given land by Alonzo and other Carpenters in Marion County, Ohio in the
1830's. I suspect that they were either siblings or first cousins given all
of the other interactions and coincidences regarding them. Lewis also named
a son Alonzo, born in 1840. The elder Alonzo Carpenter ended up in Miami
County, Kansas and died there in 1900. There were a couple of Alonzo
Carpenters with ties to New York, Ohio and Kansas (also Iowa and Missouri)
that I have tried to trace. Some were related to one another and some were
not. An Alonzo Curtis Carpenter born in 1819 in New York is not one that
I'm familiar with.

Thanks but this is not the Alonzo Curtis Carpenter I'm looking for. I'm
looking for one who was born in 1819 in Mexico, NY and died in Watertown, SD
in 1916.

Carl,
I have some information on an Alonzo C. Carpenter, but it is of the readily
available and sometimes highly unreliable type that you find on the
internet. Some researchers have this Alonzo's middle name as 'Curtis' but I
can't say that it is definite. Supposedly born in 1845 in Seneca County,
Ohio and died in 1914 in Bremer County, Iowa, you can find some information
on this particular Alonzo on the
Find-A-Grave.com site. However, it sounds
as if you are looking for an Alonzo Curtis Carpenter who is much older. The
reason that I have included this Alonzo C. Carpenter in my research is to
keep him distinct from all of the other Alonzo Carpenters I have been trying
to track down through the years. Consequently, I have quite a bit of info
on numerous Alonzos, most of whom had ties to either New York or Ohio and
then Kansas, Iowa or Missouri. I have procured a few death certificates
and/or other records regarding them, so while I may not have anything for
you regarding your particular ancestor, I might have a lot of other
information that could save you time by eliminating many other
possibilities. Could you please supply the specifics for the Alonzo Curtis
Carpenter you are looking for?

Carl,
Y-DNA does help to either rule out or show a genetic connection.
FTDNA 19426 a descendant of William Carpenter-662 through Benjamin
Carpenter-13464 would be the closest lineage as presently given. And this
is Group 2, which is also referred to as the Providence, RI Carpenters.

Subject: [CARPENTER] Question on Alonzo Curtis Carpenter Father
Several years ago (2006) we thought we had broken through a brick wall and
connected my family to the Rehoboth line. Now I'm not so sure.
There appears to be serious doubt from where I sit that Amos Carpenter-48394
is the father of my Alonzo Curtis Carpenter-48405. Two ladies that I have
met on line have informed me that Alonzo's father name was not Amos,
although they couldn't provide a name, although one thinks it was Jesse.
One of them did provide a birth year of around 1770 which seems more
realistic than Amos' 1803. That would make Amos and Phebe 17 when Alonzo
was born. While not impossible, it seems inconsistent with the trend for
men to be much older when they marry and have children. Has anyone seen a
birth or death certificate for Alonzo that might list the parents' names?
BTW, I am planning to do a DNA test later this year. It may be more
important now with this question about Alonzo's parentage.

The Alonzo C. Carpenter you are discussing is in fact Alonzo Curtis
Carpenter, born 07 Oct 1845 in Attica, Seneca, Ohio. He is the son of Daniel
D. Carpenter and his second wife, Melvina Summerlin. Daniel and Melvina were
married in Attica, Seneca, Ohio on 19 Sep 1842. Daniel D. Carpenter is the
son of Caleb Carpenter and Rhoda Dyer. Daniel is my 3rd Great Grandfather.
