Nicholas Carpenter of North Waterborough Maine, got a similar deal as a
Revolutionary War vet. 160 acres in North Waterborough Maine.
Maybe this was a way of paying back wages by the Colonies and was given
to many of the vets.
The source for me was York County records in Alfred, Maine. Has the
land grant info and a map which is how I found his grave marker on his
own land.

This pension application is at Heritage Quest.
John Carpenter of Foxborough, was born 25 Apr 1763 at Houghton, now
Foxborough, he died 20 Oct 1839 at Attleborough. In 1856 his widow,
Abigail Carpenter, age 76, formerly of Foxborough, now of Milton,
applied for pension. She married John Carpenter on 13 Oct 1825, before
her marriage she was Abigail Bacon.
