Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Vivian,
While the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project does not track the Family Finder
(atDNA) test or MtDNA (mitochondrial DNA) , I am aware of many who have
tested with that autosomal DNA (atDNA) test. This includes myself. I come
from the Rehoboth, MA Carpenters represented by Group 3 of the Y-DNA
Project.
There were several Carpenter lines who went through Edgefield County, SC.
In the Carpenter Cousins Y-DNA Project Group 16 and Group 24 have ancestry
there. Group 24 in particular came from Cumberland, now Moore, County, NC.
I do not think any of Group 24 have taken an autosomal DNA test like Family
Finder. See links below.
This type of atDNA test shows ethnic breakdowns and for Family Finder it
shows DNA segments that you get from both sides of the family. Depending on
the size of a matching segment, the FTDNA computer calculates the likely
relationship to anyone at FTDNA who has taken that same test.
The Family Finder test and other autosomal tests that are similar, are
designed for two reasons. The first being the ethnic breakdown given. So
much European, African, et cetera. The second, unique for FTDNA, is to find
matching chromosome segments that are measured in centimorgans (cM). FTDNA
supplies a chromosome chart where the matching segments are located on.
Other companies do not do this. See the comparison chart at:
http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_chart
The primary problem with such tests, is the genealogy. Both people being
tested need to have a genealogy back to a common ancestor. Then and only
then can you confirm the relationship which you already would have known
with the genealogy. This is why it is not a great genealogy tool. Many
people get very frustrated when they can not confirm any matches. Many just
give up and that is very sad.
The best way to find a match is to recruit one. Find another biological
relative within 4 generations of the common ancestor and have them take the
Family Finder test. Then compare the results. It should confirm the
genealogy.
Another DNA test or option is to find a living male biological Carpenter
cousin. Test them with a Y-DNA test and they should likely match Group 24 or
Group 16.
I have emailed this message via Bcc to the two Group 24 members. Maybe they
will email or call you.
I have attached my Family Finder (atDNA) chromosomal closest matches. I have
blurred the match names and image for privacy. The 5 closest matches are 3rd
or 4th cousins. None have a genealogical match with me.
I hope this helps.

Carpenter list members,
Has anyone on this Carpenter list done the Family Finder
test with FAMILYTREEDNA.COM in Houston, Texas? Am I on your list of matches?
My paternal grandmother was a Carpenter from Edgefield District/County,
South Carolina. The family moved to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia,
after 1900. None of her brothers had sons to carry on the Carpenter
surname.
The line moved from Cumberland-Moore County, North Carolina, in the form of
Adam Carpenter and his wife, Milly (Matilda) (some claim Mildred) maybe
Sheffield about 1804. I have posted about this family connection on this
list in the past. I have also done a mtDNA test. However, this is on my
father's side and not in my maternal line. I have 130 pages of 10 people
each that are matches from 2nd cousins back to 5th and remote. Of the
limited number of people I have contacted, most do not respond. Of the ones
who have responded, they have no idea how we are related. Many do not have
any surnames posted either. I am on dialup, live in a rural area. Takes
forever to get the page up and about half the time it is busy. Carpenters
were there by c. 1765 or before.
Any Carpenter matches out there.

Shelley,
It is cool!
I have talked to Carpenters from the Rehoboth, MA genealogical line that are
African-American and whose life married many Hispanics.
I have met a Navajo whose grandfather was a Christian missionary whose first
wife died and who remarried a Native American.
I had a phone conversation with a South African whose Rehoboth, MA ancestor
settled there after a ship wreck.
All of these and many more celebrate family. And I am honored to have known
them and many more in gathering Carpenter/Zimmerman families.

Gail,
Because I am American, I am not aware of holidays in other countries. The
importance was to remind Americans why our Carpenter/Zimmerman ancestors
came to America.
If anyone wishes to share a holiday or special event regarding their
Carpenter/Zimmerman ancestors then they can do so on this list. This has
been resolved and confirmed by RootsWeb management. Anyone is free to share
about their ancestors or ask any questions about Carpenters or Zimmermans.
I wish you a delayed Happy Canada Day. Your Carpenter or Zimmerman ancestors
likely helped build Canada. You should be proud of that.
Americans and Canadians share the longest undefended (militarily) border in
the world. We share a level of freedom and peace that most of the world does
not have. We can thank our ancestors for that.
For those who are unaware of what Canada Day is, like me, I provide the
following.
Canada Day (French: Fête du Canada) is the national day of Canada, a federal
statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment
of the British North America Act, 1867 (today called the Constitution Act,
1867), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada
within the British Empire.[1][2][3] Originally called Dominion Day (French:
Le Jour de la Confédération), the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the
Canada Act was passed. Canada Day observances take place throughout Canada
as well as among Canadians internationally.

Hello List,
I would like to challenge all EVERYONE to remember why our ancestors came from one place to another. There were many reasons to move. Some came to practice their religion, some for economic reasons, some to be free and others just for a better life for their children and descendants.
Let everyone know why you celebrate your Carpenter/Zimmerman Ancestors.
Be proud of your ancestry and where your ancestors came from. Teach your family and your grandchildren. Write stories based on your ancestors.
We all are a free people who can share our thoughts and feeling about how our Carpenter/Zimmerman ancestors lived, married and died.
My father joined the United States Army under aged during World War II. He got to Europe just in time for the end of the war and the German occupation. His first horror was at Dachau. He helped bury the dead then rebury the dead again after the next winter due to peculation. Later he did two tours as a guard at Nuremburg. He was nearly killed by a pack of jungen werewolves. He was there during the Berlin Air lift and worked with the DP (displaced people) battalions. He helped re-build the German Army to be a part of NATO. He started to drink and lost his stripes on multiple occasions. He met my mother, a German National and I was born in Frankfurt am Main in the state of Hesse, West Germany.
My mother came of age during the NAZI rule and world war. Her family re-did their genealogy to hide the gypsy and a relationship with Jewish relatives. This way they would keep jobs and survive. She was a member of the woman’s auxiliary of the Hitler Youth program. She was taught to hate those who were different. She survived an American bombing attack where some of her family was killed. She helped guard train supplies and even got shot at trying to help German troops on the wrong side of the river when the NAZIs blew up the bridges. She was raped once by an American and later by a Brit. She did what ever she needed to do to raise her daughter and help the family survive in those early years after the war.
I had German relatives that fought and died on the Eastern Front. One uncle left his leg at Stalingrad. I had one who flew fighters against the Allied bombers. My mother’s cousin who married a Jewish lady fled to France where they had two children and were rounded up in 1942 and sent to Dachau where they died.
I find it amazing that my mother and father came together and raised a family. They overcame their hate. How? By simply talking, listening and learning to trust each other. They have both passed on, but I remember.
Celebrate our Carpenter and Zimmerman ancestors. Tell us a story to honor them.

Please do! Share with the list why your Carpenter or Zimmerman ancestors
went to Australia.
Be proud of your ancestry and your country. Share and teach others the
importance of January 26th 1788.

All of us on this on this list share a Carpenter or Zimmerman ancestry.
Otherwise we would not be on this list.
Celebrate freedom and sharing of information about our Carpenter and

Next time you have your Nation Day anniversary, please share a few thoughts with us. That's probably more interesting and useful than disgruntleness over someone else's pride over their celebration, especially when our three countries have so much historical connection.

While it would seem best if this forum confined its content to
genealogical issues relating to the Carpenter clan from wherever they
happen to have landed around the world, I would not be offended if
any of our Carpenter cousins from outside the US make note or comment
on their own national holidays, as long as it does not degenerate
into a political discussion.

Thank you Gail, for this perspective.
This is an international discussion list about our ancestors from all over the world, and their own traditions, cultures and ways of life.
I prefer to celebrate all the countries and cultures of our proud ancestries, not just the last one in the line.

Hello List,
For 238 years we Americans have celebrate the birth of the United States.
Some of us have Carpenter/Zimmermans who fought for Independence and some who were Loyalists who supported King George. A few of s have both! Today we are united by freedom and by our honored surnames.
In America, legal immigrants becoming citizens, those who serve in the armed forces or in community service such a firemen, police and in governmental service swear or affirm an oath that has the following key words ...
To protect and defend the Constitution of United States of America.
For too many politicians, these words have become nothing but lip service.
For this 4th of July weekend, I would like to challenge all Americans to remember why our ancestors came here. There was many reasons. Some came to practice their religion, some for economic reasons, some to be free and others just for a better life for their children and descendants. Let everyone know why you celebrate the 4th of July.
May We the People stand strong actively to protect and defend the Constitution. Today, tomorrow and forever.
God Bless you all!
Have a Safe & Happy Fourth of July!
