Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Hello Carpenter cousins,
First, a great big thank you to all the Carpenter researchers who have made my research so much easier - and fascinating.
And clarified my confusion about whether my direct Carpenter ancestors Hannah and Joseph came from Rhode Island or Rehoboth? Through this list, and the wonderful research posted by Gene and John, I learned that Joseph came from Rhode Island, and Hannah from Rehoboth - and both were Carpenters, but only VERY distant cousins!
As I am a Canadian, living just east of Vancouver, BC, Canada, almost all of my research has been done online. I'm relatively new to genealogy, but have recently inherited a treasure trove of family memorabilia, and now am completely hooked. I should have paid more attention to U.S. history in my high school years (back in the mists of time), as I now know that my American born grandfather, Edward Jay Lowe, had very deep family roots in colonial New England and Dutch New York/New Jersey.
But today's message from Kenneth G Carpenter has inspired me to introduce myself to the whole group. My Carpenter line is as follows:
Me: Elizabeth Gail McArthur, nee Stringer, born 1950 Vancouver, BC, Canada
Marian Edith Wales Lowe
b. Dec. 1924, Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada
m. Dec 1947, Gordon Stringer (UK ancestors only)
` d. May 2012, White Rock, BC, Canada
Edward Jay Lowe
b. 1883 Ypsilanti, Michigan
m. 1924, Edith Charlotte Wales, (UK and Canadian brick walls)
d. 1973, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Mary Angeline Davis
b. 1856, Troy, Oakland, Michigan
m. 1879 Austin Childs Lowe
d. 1948 Lansing, Michigan
Phebe Titus Dean (Society of Friends
b.May 1812, Cornwall, Orange, New York
m. 1843, Jehiel Davis
d. 1872, Troy, Oakland, Michigan
Abigail Carpenter (S. of F.)
b. 1776 Jamaica, Queens, New York
m. 1804 Daniel Dean (source Rochester Monthly Meeting records found online)
d. 1865, Troy, Oakland, Michigan
Benedict Carpenter (SoF)
b. Scarsdale, Westchester, NY
m. 1761 Hannah Powell,
d. 1790 Dutchess Co, NY
Benedict Carpenter (SoF)
b.1717 Musketa Cove (Oyster Bay) NY
m. 1737 Hannah Haviland
d. unknown (ancestry.com trees say 1791 Litchfield, CT??) Need help here....
William Carpenter
b. 1666 Pawtucket, Providence RI
m. 1717, Elizabeth unknown (need help here, too!)
d. 1749
Joseph Arnold Carpenter
b.1635 Providence Plantation, RI
m. 1659 Hannah Carpenter of Rehoboth, MA
d. 1670 Oyster Bay, NY
As I can only confirm this line with primary sources (bmd documents + family letters) up to Hannah Carpenter Dean, I welcome all corrections and suggestions. I'm stuck at Daniel Dean, husband of Hannah Carpenter. I believe his father was also a Daniel Dean, son of Jedediah Dean and Ariontyea Van Winkle. But I have only a first name for Daniel Sr's wife: Sarah. I suspect she belonged to the Society of Friends,; Jedediah left his son Daniel only a pittance, whereas the other sons, who didn't join the Friends, were left substantial legacies.
Again, my thanks to all my Carpenter cousins who have done such wonderful research and made it available to us all. I'd love to hear from any cousins who share any part of my line, or have any suggestions for me, or would like to know about my corner of our continent!
Gail
I receive the post but am not sure if this is how I go about asking a question. Let me know if I did it wrong. I am trying to find any information about the parents of Joseph Carpenter b. 1811 in Ohio. I last have him in MO in 1880. He had 3 wives, Mary Jane Stout, Charity Hendix and Isabel Purdy. If anyone has any info on him or his son Isaac who died very young, I would certainy appreciate it.

John,
I think there's a good reason you don't have "William Carpenter of
Chiseldon" on file: it's doubtful that he existed.
Chiseldon is suspiciously similar to Cheselbourne, the Dorset village still
repeatedly said online to have been the home of Elizabeth Arnold, wife of
William1 Carpenter of Providence, and sometimes said to have been his home
as well. The Arnolds, however, were from Ilchester, Somerset, and William1
of Providence from Amesbury, Wiltshire. They met and married in Providence,
not in England (see ‎carpentercousins.com/Wm1_Providence.pdf). It's
therefore probable that the entry at Findmypast is not only confused but is
based on faulty information.

Hey all Carpenters, I just got a flash on my Facebook page. For all of those of you who have been thinking about have your DNA tested with FamilyTree DNA but didn't want to spend all that money, now is your opportunity. FamilyTree DNA has an unprecedented sale for either the 12 Marker Y-DNA or the mtDNA test for only $49.00. The Y-DNA test is for men only since we inherit the Y chromosome from our fathers. The mtDNA test is for either men or women since we all inherit Mitochondrial DNA from our mothers. This is an important opportunity for us all to grow the data base of Carpenters. This would allow us to make a bunch of new connections through some of those brick walls so many of us have been up against. For more information check out this link. http://www.familytreedna.com/landing/Y-DNA12-Promo.aspx
But hurry the sale ends tomorrow May 13th, 2013. Don't miss this opportunity.

Carpenter Listers,
Can someone involved in organizing the Carpenter Researchers meeting at the
Civic Center (?) in Mount Pleasant, Texas, on Monday June 24, 2013, please
repost that contact information to this list and send it to this John
Carpenter (texjonmac at yahoo.com) who asked about it. I am not one of the
organizers, but I hope to go. I have been working on some other projects
and can't put my hands on the specific information right now.
Carpenter is one of my four main lines. My Carpenters were from
Moore/Cumberland County, North Carolina to Edgefield District/County, South
Carolina c. 1804 to Augusta, Richmond County, Georgia, after 1900. I am
originally from Georgia; I just married a Texan.
Is anyone having as much trouble with e-mail subscriptions at rootsweb.com
as I have. This is not the first time I have had this problem. I have not
received any postings in over a week. I subscribe to roughly 40-50
subscriptions from two separate e-mail addresses (to keep mine and my
husband's families separated). I have not been able to get much information
from rootsweb.com either. I use a small ISP out of Nacogdoches, Texas, and
their system administrator does not know what the problem is. Yesterday, he
set me up with this-mail address on another domain name that they have. I
have gradually added back about a half a dozen subscriptions that seem to be
working, except for one I tried. They are not going to my spam folder!!!
ISP System Adm says they are not getting to their server in Nacogdoches.
This person has not been there that long. The last times this happened it
eventually got fixed some where along the line. Wish I knew whose side this
problem is on.
However, the first one I tried to Allen still has not worked the second
time.

Hello,
I recently heard of the death of Clarence Carpenter-109259 who was born 27 Apr 1913 and who died 10 Apr 2013.
He was the father of Pamela “Pam” Carpenter, one of the many dedicated Carpenter Researchers.
Pam wrote:
I also would like to share that my father Clarence Carpenter died 17 days shy of his 100th birthday on April 10, 2013 to be with my mother who passed 6 months ago.
Clarence was the grandson of John Draper Jr. Carpenter through son Henry who was killed by lightening in 1924.
Our condolences and prayers are with Pam and her family.

John, thank you for your input. I do have a question, however, concerning
William (97436) vs Robert Carpenter and Phebe McNair (as mentioned in
"Calvin Loomis Carpenter, 1808-1886, Middlesex, Yates County, NY to Athens,
Calhoun County, MI : fifth child of Robert Carpenter and Phebe McNair ; his
ancestors and descendants Carpenter, Elma Wisnieski , published 1999".
According to "Milestones Along the Path We Trod" written by my own Great
Aunt Anna H. Anderson, she seems to name Robert Carpenter as father of her
mother, Phoebe who m. Horace Kent Halladay. Is this a coincidense or a
possibility that the above mentioned Robert and Phebe might be the parents
of Phoebe C. Carpenter?
The other question is of what source gives William Carpenter as her father?
Thank you for your help and for the suggested researching - WOW!!
Marilyn
