Does anyone happen to have any 'personal handwritten letters in German'
written by Rev. William Carpenter (1762-1833)?
Or anyone have any his letters have been translated from German to English?
We are gathering as much personal information about him for an event
(probably in June)to be held at our Hopeful Lutheran Church here in Boone
County KY.
I'll post the announcement for the event to the message boards as soon as
details are available.
Also, I guess there's never been a sketch or portrait of him?
Thank you!

Greetings all!
Has anyone done any detailed research into the Revolutionary War service
records of Rev. William Carpenter (1762-1833) and/or his father, William
Carpenter Sr. (1732?-1810) ?
I'm familiar with the mentions published in books of both of them being in
the Revolutionary War and both being at the surrender of Cornwallis at the
Battle of Yorktown in 1781.
If you are interested in the book sources that I have found and what they
say, you can find my worksheet by visiting our website at :
http://www.boonegermanna.com/revcarpenterrevwar
On that worksheet, I have also posted some questions and comments about the
book sources.
Rev. William Carpenter died 18 Feb 1833 and did not file a pension.
What a shame there is no Pension File for him, as pension files give so much
detailed information as to what battles they served, their Captains, family,
etc.
The National Archives has no pension file and no military service file for
either him or his father.
I've had researchers go into the Library of Virginia to check military
records there and a couple other folks in Virginia checked muster rolls and
all their resources.
I have checked www.fold3.com , and have checked all the Pensions filed here
in Boone County KY to see if by chance William Carpenter was a witness in
someone else's pension court record. But no mention given.
Pensions here were filed around the end of 1832 and Rev. Carpenter passed
away on 18 Feb 1833.
The oldest published statement I could find was that of M.L. Stoever's
article dated 1864 and published in the 1869 book "Annals of the American
Pulpit" by William Sprague.
It states "In 1778, when he was in his sixteenth year, we find him, WITH HIS
BROTHER, entering the Revolutionary Army, filled with patriotic ardour, and
deeply interested in the principles involved in this issue. He was present
at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis, and participated in other memorable
scenes in our early history, which exerted an influence upon his future
character."
---So it states that he entered the Revolutionary Army WITH HIS BROTHER, not
his father?
Records say he only had ONE brother, Samuel Carpenter who was born 15 Mar
1759, married Dinah Crisler, died 21 Jun 1811 Madison County VA.
Since this Samuel Carpenter died in 1811, he did not file a pension and I
found no military records for him either. But I'm told that doesn't mean he
did not serve as so many military records from the Revolutionary War are
missing or have been lost.
I did, however, find a Samuel Carpenter whose wife filed a Pension # W. 663
and in the pension file it states this Samuel Carpenter is the son of John
Carpenter (brother to William Carpenter Senior)---- so this Samuel Carpenter
was a 1st cousin to Rev. William Carpenter.
>From what I can find, this Samuel Carpenter was born about 1761,
>married
Margaret 'Peggy' Blankenbaker (who filed the pension for her late husband),
and he died 1825 VA
All of other book sources, say it was Rev. Carpenter and HIS FATHER that
were present at the Battle of Yorktown.
On page 48 of the book: "History of the Hebron Lutheran Church, Madison
County, Virginia from 1717-1990" by Rev. William Peter Huddle, Pastor, the
below is stated:
"When 16 years of age, he entered the Revolutionary army, fought under Rev.
Peter Muhlenberg, and continued in service till the surrender of Lord
Cornwallis at Yorktown, at which he and his father were present."
This was the first mention I found that "he fought under Rev. Peter
Muhlenberg" but no military record found under his command either. But
again, I'm told that doesn't mean he did not serve as so many military
records from the Revolutionary War are missing or have been lost.
I'm not experienced in Revolutionary War research, and would appreciate any
direction or other resources to try if anyone has any suggestions.
I was just hoping to find what 'Regiment' or military proof for either of
them for at least the Battle of Yorktown.
Thanks much!
