Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I think I would like to add my own thoughts as well...
I strongly agree with all of the comments all of you have made.
Unfortunately, it is also a sad commentary on what we have become and on what we are becoming.
I also, sadly, console myself by the knowledge that I will not be on this earth to see the end result of the road we are on.
It becomes more and more difficult to maintain true pride in our country when more and more people seem so intent on the destruction of our heritage.
There are way too many examples to list here.
But at least one, for me, symbolizes many of the others...
How sad that the expression of Merry Christmas or God bless you by our children to our veterans is somehow deemed as offensive by the VA...aka, OUR government.
Isn't "diversity" supposed to be open and welcoming to all ideas and all people? Instead it is the excuse used to silence whatever it is that you don't agree with...
But then I believe diversity itself is a myth. Just look at most major cities, they are not diverse where it should count the most...where we live, it is diverse where there is no choice, and where there is choice there is not diversity.
Hence we have Hispanic neighborhoods and Chinese neighborhoods and Jewish neighborhoods and Italian neighborhoods and Vietnamese neighborhood...all very clearly defined and separate.
So enough from me.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone...one of the few places remaining where that expression is still welcomed.
Thank you for that.
Bill

Well said, John. However I believe it is not only our youth who we need to connect with, but more importantly with their teachers who are forming their young minds in a different direction than we would like them to go! Way too many 'teachers' of Socialistic forms of government while outwardly teaching 'history' or other non-subject lectures to our young people!

Dennis,
I agree with your point. IF, We the People ... Our WE the Carpenter Cousins
... do not teach and show our children about the Founding of the United
States of America and what it takes to be a true citizen, then we as a
people are doomed to enslavement.
What type of enslavement? Loss of freedom, loss of religion, and loss of
freedom of expression to name a few. When the state becomes our god, then
what the state giveth the state can taketh away.
One example. Our founding fathers established a protection for religion. Not
to protect the people from expressing religion or practicing it, but
protecting the people from the establishment of a state religion. Today the
elites express a selective atheist anti-Christian attitude as the the state
religion. It is their doctrine and becoming case law here in America. More
and more, expression of religion is to conform to the new state atheist
religion. AND I see no difference between what the Taliban did in
Afghanistan by blowing up the 5-6,000 year old Buddha statues and those in
America today who wish to remove crosses and other symbols from the public
view. The end result is the same. This includes the destruction of religious
symbols in war memorials and grave yards of our ancestors. And, yes, a
leaked memo from the ACLU confirms their goal.
We must engage our minds, the minds of the youth and our fellow citizens.
We must awaken the sleeping giant of America.
As we honor and learn about our Carpenter ancestors, let us learn and teach
why they came and why they were willing to defend this Country with their
lives if necessary.
As Dennis said:
We as keepers of that history have an obligation to at least try to spread
that knowledge.
Amen!

Point well taken John. The history of the descendants UEL ancestors is
equally important to the story of our country The point of my challenge to
join SAR/DAR is to get more people involved in preserving the history of our
heritage and enthuse the youth of our nation to want to learn about our
government and how to protect our freedoms. Membership in UEL should also be
used to further that goal.
To many people today are more interested in what happens to the Kardasian's
than what their representatives are doing in their State Houses or
Washington D.C. Until we engage the minds of our youth, and give them the
knowledge and perspectives of our shared history no meaningful improvements
can or should be expected. We as keepers of that history have an obligation
to at least try to spread that knowledge.

Whatever one’s opinions are regarding various social/political/religious trends in this country, it is inappropriate to use this mailing list as a forum for expressing them. I'm disappointed that the list administrator (perhaps due to his own leanings) didn’t nip it in the bud.
Let’s just stick to genealogy, shall we?

I have to challenge that simple reply. While a number of Carpenters were
in fact loyalists, we as a whole are a mixed bag. One of my patriot
ancestors was a 4th Great Grandfathers. At that degree of pedigree there are
roughly 64 possible persons who could have been Continental Soldiers, Militiamen,
or civilians who contributed some sort of support to the Patriot cause, or
loyalists. My point is that from that large a pool there is sure to be a
patriot ancestor amongst them.
After all, we Providence Plantation Carpenters have an ancestor who was
both, patriot and traitor, who died a retired British Brigadier General,
Benedict Arnold by name. My 4th Cousin 7x removed.

Hello Dennis,
I noticed you had mentioned the "Loyalist Line".My family originated in
Hingham/Weymouth then to Rehoboth and on and on then finally entrenched
themselves in the "Eastern Townships" of Quebec. As you might know, that area
was mostly "Anglo".Early 1900's my grandfather Guy Carpenter and 2 brothers
came stateside.
I have always wondered about my relatives,Leach,Farnham,Basford were
loyalists. A couple were given land grants by the crown.
What I found the "Land Grants" were awarded to those families with multiple
children.
If you might have any ideas about reseach on the "loyalists" might you be
able to steer me.
Sincere appreciation,
Robert Carpenter

Bob,
I would start with some basic back ground information. Please pay attention to the sources used at these links for further reading.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Empire_Loyalisthttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalist_(American_Revolution)
Then the most important link you will need ... The main page of the UELAC (United Empire Loyalists Association of Canada: http://www.uelac.org/
Pay attention to the link on the left side called Resources, hover your mouse over it and a pop up with show.
And you should read the Research Guide at this link. It is very helpful.

John,
Then ask the question ...
How many members of the group are United Empire Loyalists and those
Loyalists that fled southward that never were given a formal name?
For background information: At the conclusion of the American Revolutionary
War some Loyalists fled or joined others in other parts of the British
Empire. The southern colonists moved mostly to Florida, which had remained
loyal to the Crown, and to other British Caribbean possessions.
The northern colonists largely migrated to Ontario, New Brunswick and Nova
Scotia, where they later became known as the United Empire Loyalists (UEL).
Despite some tall tales, only about 15% of the Loyalists or 65-70,000 fled
to other parts of the British Empire. Most that went north were compensated
with Canadian land with only a few that received cash distributed through
formal claims procedures. Those claim documents still exist and provide
fascinating genealogical information. The records of those who fled south
are fragmented and not well kept. We know that many received land and others
cash to move back to England.
Historians have estimated that between 15 and 20 percent of the 2.5 million
whites in the American colonies were Loyalists, or about 500,000 men, women
and children. But, only about 15% of the Loyalists or 65 to 70,000 fled to
other parts of the British Empire. Over about two decades, some 10% or so
of those who had fled came back to the United States.
Make no bones about this, the American Revolution was a CIVIL WAR. There
were atrocities and evil committed by both sides. However in most states,
especially in the north, those loyalists who were willing to give allegiance
to the new government could stay.
During the War of 1812, cousins fought cousins once again. At the Battle of
Lundy Lane (just north of the Niagara River) where some of the bloodiest
fighting took place, Carpenters in the New York militia faced and at least
one Carpenter died facing their cousins from the Lincoln Brigades (Canadian
Militia).
History is history. It is what it was. Since then more Americans have died
fighting with their British (UK) cousins. Think of the sacrifices of World
War I and World War II. Today Americans and those from England and other UK
members still support one another. And this includes a Carpenter ...
Andrew P. Carpenter, LCPL USMC from Columbia, TN
– 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine
Expeditionary Force. Died on February 19, 2011, in Germany of wounds
received when he was shot in the neck during combat operations in Helmand
province, Afghanistan, on February 14, 2011.
Remember and honor our Carpenter ancestors.

Hello,
My ancestor Samuel Carpenter-14052 (1741 MA – 1810 PA) served in the American Revolutionary War. My daughters, if they choose, could join and use the documentation that I have to join the DAR. They have not chosen yet to do so. <sigh>
I have assisted in a very small way to the Carpenter collection at the SAR Genealogical Research Library in St Louis, KY. Jerry & Kaye (Carpenter) Ford helped bind and deliver many Carpenter research materials and books to this library. They set a good example. Please consider donating to the SAR Library! See: http://library.sar.org/
Samuel Carpenter of Richmond, NH, private in Capt. Oliver Capron's company, Col. Ephraim Doolittle's 18th Massachusetts Regiment, enlisted July 10, 1775; served eight months near Boston. This period of time reflects from when General Washington took command until the end of the Siege of Boston on 17 March 1776.
Samuel was on the roll of Capt. Oliver Capron's company. Winter Hill, Oct. 6, 1775.

The 18th Massachusetts Regiment was commanded by Colonel Ephraim Doolittle, who left the service in October 1775. Command of the regiment passed to its next senior officer, Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin Holden, of Princeton.[48] It served in the Siege of Boston until its disbandment at the end of 1775.

NOTE: In January 1776 many units were consolidated (disbanded, reformed) and re-designated. The 18th Massachusetts (along with the Greaton’s Regiment, formerly Heath’s Regiment – in 1777 known as the 3rd Mass) and others became the 24th Continental Regiment (Massachusetts Line) under Col. John Greaton. Samuel Carpenter was probably assigned to this unit until after the Siege of Boston was lifted on 17 March 1776.

We find Samuel Carpenter again on the roll of Capt. Capron's company, Col. Samuel Ashley's Regiment of Militia in the State of New Hampshire. He enlisted June 29, 1778 and served five days (discharged 3 July).
Samuel Carpenter served and helped win our Independence. I remember and honor him.

Merry Christmas to all and very well said good sir.
I see a fellow member of the Sons of the American Revolution replied and
this spurred the question, How many of our group are members of SAR/DAR?
This leads to the second question, If not, why not? The mission of SAR is to
promote American patriotism and to educate our youth in the importance of
remembering our shared American history, recognizing the challenges and
sacrifices our ancestors faced and paid for many times in their blood, to
provide the future we enjoy today.
Much of the work of becoming a member of SAR/DAR has already been done by
others and only takes the effort to make the final connections. I encourage
all to investigate becoming members of SAR/DAR and adding to the heritage we
all share.

Merry Christmas to all!
As I remember the reason for the season, I reflect on His goodness and
mercy.
I reflect this season about the last year, forgiving and setting away the
deeds of those who I need to do.
I remember the sorrow of those who I have lost, knowing I will see them
again after it is my time to pass on.
I am afraid for our Country and the path it is on. This has troubled me
greatly. I pray for those who believe that our God given rights are nothing
and that the elites can promise so much more but deliver so much less. I
pray for those who believe that a collective salvation is more important
than any personal Salvation from our Lord God.
I have over the last many decades read diaries, stories and wills of many
Carpenters. Almost all mention, give credit to or reflect the promise of
hope in a greater power. Many also credit the Constitution of the United
States of America for the opportunities they have had and enjoyed. Many were
willing to give up almost everything they had for the promise here in
America.
All of our ancestors were immigrants. Most left the corruption of the kings,
elites and state religions for a better life here in America. They did not
have to bow down to the state religion (including the state religion of
atheism) or demi-gods or have laws that change based on the will of a king.
America is not perfect. Our goal is a more perfect Union. We have had our
share of horrors and reconciliation. We have learned and shown tolerance
for many things. We can be what ever we want to be. Why? Because it is We
the People, not the individuals, but we as a team that will triumph over
adversity.
Most of us want to live their own lives and raise their families in peace.
We hope to have a better world for our children. We want to practice our
religion in peace and security. For the most part the farther away and less
intrusive government, the better.
Our ancestors fought and died for their country, their families and their
God. They wanted to be free from oppression of Nationalist Socialists,
Soviet Socialists and the power of the elite who think their way is always
better.
In any society where tolerance is abused by the minorities, where the
radical minority try to enslave the majority in some manner, there is always
a correction that involves violence and hatred.
I pray that we as Carpenters will do our part to protect and defend the
Constitution of the United States. That we might advise those in the
minority that the abuses of tolerance and attempts to destroy the
Constitutional rights of the People will fail. When they, the minority,
continue to deny our Constitutional rights and expression there of, there
will be a reckoning.
I hope and pray that the minority will stop their attempts to radically
transform the the United States into a European (at best) or third world
type country. We as a people need to say enough is enough.
We must be firm, polite and to educate them that the destruction of what we
hold dear will not happen. Because if it does, all rules go out the window.
And the consequences will be far more terrible than anyone can imagine.
If you have come this far, bless you. May the peace and blessing of our God,
the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, be upon you and your family.
May the New Year provide new hope and blessings from our Creator. And may we
be willing to be tools in His service.

Dear John,
Having just read what you just posted. My thoughts follow in the same line. I
would have never been able to expound as well as you. With that I say
thanks.
Yes, doing the "Carpenter" genealogy.I have found many ancestors were in the
service of the United States of America expecially i n the late 1700's.
With that, I am proud of my heritage.

I feel sorry for anybody who believes a Christmas message about God, our God-given rights and the US Constitution is a political message. Our ancestors fought hard to retain these god-given rights. Merry Christmas and a Happy & Healthy New Year.
