Some corrections and additions to John's DRAFT Ancestry of Danford M. Carpenter-68905 - 7 generations:
> << 16. Ephraim Carpenter-6889 . . . died on 30 Apr 1743 in Attleboro,Bristol,MA. >>
Ephraim died in Rehoboth (VR, 2:250).
> << 17. Hannah Read-7664 . . . died on 13/30 Aug 1717 in Attleboro,Bristol,MA. >>
Hannah died in Rehoboth (VR, 2:230).
> << 18. Jonathan Carpenter-115 was born about 11 Dec 1672 >>
Jonathan was born in Dec. 1672, but the day is uncertain. The published volume of Rehoboth VR says 6 Dec.; while the original (1:6) is illegible, it doesn't appear to be a 6. Jonathan's birthdate should be written as __ [illeg.] Dec. 1672.
> << 32. William Carpenter (See ECZ notes)-103 . . . married MRIN:111 Miriam Sales-604 on 10 Dec 1663 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. >>
William Carpenter and Miriam Sale (as the marriage record spells her surname) married on 10 12th month [February] 1663[/4] (Rehoboth VR, 1:44). Prior to 1752 in England and its colonies, the first month of the year was March.
> << 36. Samuel Carpenter (See ECZ notes)-108 was born about 1638 in of,Weymouth,Norfolk,MA. He died on 20 Feb 1682/1683 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. He was buried on 22 Feb 1682/1683 >>
He was born "probably" in Weymouth and was buried at Rehoboth on 20 February 1682[/3] (Rehoboth VR, 1:56). His death is not recorded.
> << 37. Sarah Redway or Readaway-109 was born about 1642 in of,Hingham,Massachusetts Bay Colony >>
It's not certain where Sarah's parents lived before settling in Rehoboth (probably in 1644). It may well have been Hingham, where her father had served a three-year term of indenture, but there's no evidence to confirm that he remained there after mid-1640. It's therefore not possible to say with certainty that Sarah was born in, or was ever of, Hingham. It would be appropriate to say that she was born "probably" in Hingham.
> << 39. Hannah Palmer-8497 was born in 1657 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. >>
Hannah was born at Rehoboth on 8 November 1657 (VR, 1:13)
> << 67. [Edward Sale's wife] Margaret-1698 was born about 1609. She died on 13 Jul 1664 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. She was buried about 13 Jul 1664 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. >>
There is no basis for estimating Margaret's birth year. It was Edward Sale's wife Rebecca who died on 13 July 1664; her burial is not recorded. Edward Sale’s first wife, Margaret ______, was in 1637 convicted of adultery with two men (Mass. Bay Col. Recs., 1:198, 202-3; Anderson, _The Great Migration_, 6:142-43, 145). In 1637/8 all three were sentenced to be whipped and banished, “never to return again, on pain of death” (Mass. Bay Col. Recs., 1:225; Anderson, 6:143). It is often assumed that Margaret was Miriam Sale’s (#33) mother, but this has not been established and, since Miriam was born say 1644-1646, is open to serious doubt.
> << 74. James Redway or Redeway-504 was born about 1615/1616 in Dublin,Dublin,Ireland. He died in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. >>
James1 Redway was born "say" 1616 ("say" is based on less precise data than "about"); he was living in Dublin in 1637, but his birthplace in unknown. A descendant said that the family had originated in co. Devon, England, and that's where the name was concentrated. James was buried at Rehoboth on 31 March 168[4] (Rehoboth VR, 1:56a); his estate inventory, dated 14 May 1684, calls him "lately deceased" (Plymouth Colony Wills, 4:2:73).
> << 76. John French-8511 was born in 1622 in ,,England, UK. He was christened on 26 May 1622 in Assington, Suffolk, England, UK. He died on 1 Feb 1697 in Deerfield,,MA. He was buried in Feb 1697. He married MRIN:3804 Freedom Kingsley-8512 in 1654 in Rebobath,Delaware. >>
> << 77. Freedom Kingsley-8512 was born in 1636 in ,,England, UK. She died on 26 Jul 1689 in Northampton,Hampshire,MA. She was buried on 26 Jul 1689. >>
I haven't researched this couple deeply, but these items should be approached with caution. There is no such place as Rehoboth, Delaware, and there was no Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, until 1891. If in fact Freedom Kingsley married John French, it was probably in Dorchester, Mass., where she was apparently born, about (not "in") 1636. According to Colket's _Founders of Early American Families_, those Kingsleys that migrated to Rehoboth, Mass., didn't do so until 1668. More to the point, evidence seems lacking as to whether these two were the parents of John French (#38).
> << 78. Jonah or Jonas Palmer-643 was born about 1620/1625 in London,,England, UK. He died on 22 Jun 1709 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. He married MRIN:506 Elizabeth Grissell Griswold-7786 on 3 May 1659 in Rehoboth, Bristol, MA. >>
Jonah2 Palmer, son of Walter1 Palmer, was born say 1621; neither father or son's origin is known. "Jona" Palmer married Elizabeth _______, 3 May 1655 (not 1659) (Rehoboth VR, 1:44). A deed of Charlestown land from "Jonas" and Elizabeth Palmer to William Bullard [he had married Elizabeth's widowed mother], dated 9 November 1655, identifies Elizabeth's father as Francis Grissell of Charlestown (Middlesex Co. Deeds, 1:152-53). Francis Grissell, who died at Charlestown in 1652, is not to be confused with Francis Griswold of Norwich, Conn. (d. 1671), son of Edward Griswold, formerly of Kenilworth, Warwickshire, England.
> << 79. Elizabeth Grissell Griswold-7786 was born about 1645 in Kennilworth,W,England, UK. >>
Jonah and Elizabeth (Grissell) Palmer were married in 1655 and their first child, Hannah (#39), was born in 1657; if Elizabeth had been born in 1645, she would have married at 10 and had Hannah at 12. Elizabeth Grissell was born ca. 1637 (she was about 15 in 1652, according to the Middlesex Co. record of her father's nuncupative will); her birthplace was perhaps Cambridge, Mass., where her father first settled, ca. 1636. The Griswolds of Connecticut were from Kenilworth, but Francis Grissell's origin has not been identified.
> << Shalbourne,Berkshire,now in,Wiltshire >>
When the Carpenters lived there, Shalbourne Parish straddled the Berkshire–Wiltshire line. The church where William2 and Abigail (Briant) Carpenter married and their first five children were baptized was then in Berkshire; their home was in Newtown, in the Wiltshire part of the parish.
> << Old Rehoboth Cem.,now,Newman Cem., >>
The cemetery didn't change from one name to the other; it is known by both names.

He was son of Jonathan and Olive Sessions Carpenter of Randolph VT
)
Danford M. Carpenter (1801-1889)
Sometime after 1860 and before 1865, Danford M. Carpenter, son Norman
Danford & daughter Florence all moved to Kent Co., MI - Grand Rapids. DM
Carpenter & son Norman D. Carpenter owned "Carpenter, Judd & Co." located @ "13
Canal St." (see 1865 City Directory -name misspelled as "Danforth"). This
business mined & sold lime (for plaster work) & hardware. By 1870, Norman D.
Carpenter built a substantial house at the NW corner of Fountain & Prospect
-1870 US census & 1870 city directory "57 Fountain" - today's "333
Fountain St."(see google street view). Sometime after the death of DM Carpenter,
Norman D. Carpenter sold out that successful business & moved to Detroit, MI
(see 1900 US census for Norman D. & Ellen Carpenter). Wife of Norman,
"Ellen" died & in 1914 he married w#2 Mary L. Pond (b. Turin, NY 1862) @
Barnesville, Belmont Co., Ohio 27 Jan 1914. They next moved to Los Angelos, CA -
he died prior to 1930 - find widowed "Mary P. Carpenter" in 1930 US census?
Daughter of DM, Florence Carpenter never married- kept books for her
father/brother's co. until sold. I am tracing the history of "333 Fountain St.,
Grand Rapids, Kent Co., MI" but am not a descendant. Hope you find this
info helpful for your Carpenter family tree? .
Hey John!
Thanks for the info. I have not seen Danford or Norman in my lineage
anywhere to date; but that's what make this stuff so interesting. You never
know when you will be surprised with a connection.
I will keep this printout and watch for those names.
Thanks much,
George Carpenter
