I think allot of people have the 2nd toe the same length. It doesn't matter
if you're a Carpenter or have a Carpenter connection. My 2nd toe is longer
than my big toe and so is my wife's.
Interesting topic though as far as feet go. :)

This has got my interest too.
My dad and two of his brothers were about 5'9" to 5'11'' and slim. The other
is stocky. My two brothers and I are slim, but very different heights. The
oldest is about 5'10" and about 160 lbs, I'm 6'1'' and 190 lbs, and the
youngest is 6'4" and 200-205 lbs. Two cousins of ours have heights of 6'8"
and 7' and being in a muscular slim catagory.
I didn't ask or checked anybody else in my family about their 2nd toe being
the same length as the big toe, but mine are.

Carpenters: I have been reading about the Carpenters and their long second
toe, and it got me thinking. I am a Henderson and I have no Carpenters in my
family that I have found, as of yet. However I DO have the Long second toe on
both of my feet. Could this be an indicator that I may have Carpenters in my
line??. My wife is a Sutton, however she has Carpenter's in her line, But
she doesn't have the long second toes.
This may be something to look into and see how many other non-Carpenters
have the large second toe.

Hello,
Actually our toes were discussed several times when we were growing up and everyone would get barefoot and compare toes. My grandmother would make jokes about our toes. She told us kids that having a longer second toe meant we would "be the boss in our family like all the Carpenters." Obviously a stab at my grandfather's tendacy to correct her right in the middle of her telling a story as he often did, but we kids didn't pick up on that til we were older, ha !
My grandfather was tall and I'm I am guessing about 6 ft but my dad and his brother
were only 5'10. Grandpa had blue-gray eyes. My grandma's were dark brown (surname
Cruise). My sis and brother got the gray eyes and I got the brown ones but like John,
mine have the gold speckles.
My line came through Georgia in the late 1700s and ended up in Ashland Alabama about 1840s where they lived several generations until the depression forced them to look for jobs in the cities.
Donna
Not only are my second toes longer than my large toes, I can wave and wiggle them independently of the others. ;D

My Mother was a Carpenter, she, my brother, sister and I all have the 2nd toe longer than the big toe.? She had hazel eyes as I do, but I don't remember what color my grand fathers eyes were but he was over 6 ft tall as was my uncle.

Hey Guys--- As far as looking or comparing heights, eye colors, etc......it's all up to the genes; who they married and what genetics they brought with them into each family......pure and simple (in my opinion).
I am the 4th child of 5 children and am 5 foot 2 ish---my sibs are over 5 foot 8 ++++++ And NO mailman was involved! My Aunt was my height also out of 2 children....so who knows. I finally felt like I was not adopted (LOL Just Joking).
Just abit about my lineage:

Sarah Carpenter married 1st to WM Parrish who died during the CW)-her next husb was my 2nd gr grfather, George Washington Pope (in TX). They had one daughter, my grgrmother Amma (Amy) Hannah Pope who married my grgrfather Thomas McCland Atkins.

I have both of these traits and don't know how common they might be with
other ancestors.
When I had my colors done 20 years ago, I was told that yellow is the main
color in my eye, although, I was always told they are hazel. Second toe
definitely as long as big toe, also has the slight unity between them; that is the
web is slightly apparent. Is that a Carpenter trait? New England/New York
ancestors appear to have been tall and skinny.

That's interesting. My grandfather Joseph Carpenter was about 5'10, but his son George Robert was at least 6'2 or taller. Vicki

Pam,
One of the concerns about DNA testing is privacy.
That said, there are some various pictures of Carpenters in the CE CD 2001
under the Misc Pics folder. And there will be more in the future.
John L. Carpenter (List Admin) and I (John R.) were often confused with each
other because of our beards and glasses. Now that he shaved off his beard,
he looks really looks better than me.
Some time ago on this list we remarked and discussed the two main body sizes
of male New England type Carpenters. One about 5'9" to 5'10" stocky and
muscular and the other body type thinner and about 6'3" or so. Hair types
went from black/brown to reddish (mainly in the taller males) with some male
pattern receeding hairlines. The 29" inseam was common in the smaller body
build. Eyes are basicly brown yet show a strong showing of lighter colored
eyes. At one point we even discussed the common European trait of the
second toe (next to the big toe) being about as long as the big toe!
My father is 6'3" and I am 5'10" and I resemble my uncle (5'10.5") more than
I do my father. Yet my brother is a 6'3" and resembles my father. If their
were not over 4,000 miles difference in location, I would have wondered
about my sire!
I remember that in some famlies the male height difference in families often
jumped a generation. Are there exceptions in body types? Of course! I know a
few who have the thinner body type but not the 6' plus height.
Female Carpenters seem to run the entire specrum of body types, colors and
sizes.
All in all, there is nothing really strange about Carpenters except, well,
er, ah, ... a strong desire to learn more about our ancestry! :-)
