Perhaps someone will find a clue to their own personal family history, if
not at least it is interesting.

My family lore has it that Henry Carpenter’s oldest daughter Charlotte
Carpenter (b. about 1820 in NY ?) married a man named Skelton (?) and had four
children.
My family lore has it that Henry Carpenter’s oldest son Marion Carpenter (b.
about 1822 in NY) married an English woman, relocated to New Orleans and had
at least one son.
This Henry Carpenter was born about 1795 in NY or VT and married Roxana Fay
about 1820 in Salina, NY. They relocated to DeKalb and LaSalle Counties in Il
linois in 1836/1837.
So far I cannot find any Census records, etc. that would support either of
these stories.
Does anyone have a Charlotte or a Marion Carpenter in their past or any
evidence that might support the stories for either of Henry’s oldest children?

Terry,
Seems like I remember at one time a long while back there was someone
on this list with ties to the William Bailey Carpenter line and/or
Carpenters in Burke Co GA. I cain't think of who that was, however.
In the meanwhile, I'm going to try to contact the Sinkler people and
see if anyone there can do a lookup of the Carpenter info in any of
Jean Grigsby's books. I only saw one of the earliest books she put out,
and it was rather sketchy. That was a long time ago, so maybe there are
some updates by now.
I guess I don't understand what you said about Isabella Carpenter and
her relationship to Benjamin as possibly his mother. Please elaborate.
Anyhow, Jan Nix jann9669(a)aol.com posted the following about Isabella on
the genforum.com Carpenter forum.
Thanks,
Rick

Thomas M. Carpenter
Date: June 07, 2004 at 12:37:42
Looking for Thomas M. Carpenter, born late 1700's. Married a woman
named Isabella who was born in Virginia, and migrated to Georgia. By
1840, Isabella was in Pike County, Alabama with two teenagers, Mary, b.
c.1823, and Morgan E. Carpenter, b. Sept. 18, 1828. Morgan was my
gggrandfather.
They all were in Milton, Santa Rosa Co., Florida by 1845, and remained
here. Isabella died Jan. 15, 1870 and is buried in the Milton
Cemetery. I don't know where they had lived in Georgia or what happened
to Thomas M. This is my "brick wall". My father told me that their name
was originally spelled "Carpentier" and that they were French, Dutch,
Scotch/Irish, and American Indian.
Just thought I would post it again since I got no response the first time Maybe somebody will respond this time ,persistence pays off sometimes. Sorry to those who have already read this,I know it's long and rambles on but I feel like somebody should regognize soemthing!!
Pleasse read below email ,Thank You.

Subject: Carpenters Chaple
I am trying to find out info on The Carpenter Chaple ,Now known as ,Wallingfrd Methodist Church, In 1870 John & Rachel Carpenters son Richard Carpenter gave the ground for the , Meth Episcopil Chaple & GraveYard, I was told that there are Hundreds of Carpenter's buried there, This info was sent to me by way of a letter that ny Aunt had recieved from a Don D Adams. He also mentions in another letter that Daniel Carpenter's will which he wrote on May 23, 1850 and proved June 17, 1850, His will is in Lewis Co Ky Court House Will Book D, Page 375, He also mentions trying to prove that Daniel is either Brother or first Cousin to John Carpenter who Married Rachel Hinton? (the last name is hard to read) and died 1837 ( i guess he meant john carpenter died 1837 because daniel died 1850) he says that John & Rachles Tombstones are still standing, He says that he knows that John carpenters father was Richard carpenter who built a log cabin in 1793 in mason County Ky which is now Flemin!
g County Ky,It says that Richarddied about 1834 on his farm near Wallingford, He also mentions Harvey son of Daniel had a brothe named Daniel who went west and a brother named George who was given 80 acres in Indiana, He says he also had another brother William. He also mentions that he had heard that His Carpenters came from England and settled in the eastern northern states such as New York, and came down by way of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and then Ohio and in to Kentucky he says in 1798 Fleming County wasformed and thats where most of the Capenters were.He also mentions other SDurnames such as,Miller ,Breeze,Wright,Carter,Duffy,Hinton?,Elliot,Kincaid, Hunter,Hurst5,,Gooding,Hickerman,Jones,,Doyle,Plummer,Sutton, Don also mentions a Foxport Pleasureville Cemetery,in one of his letters. he mentions a Dud Carpenter whop was a Undertakesr in Wallinford Fleming Co, Dud died in 1935,He also mentions a Mr Richard Elke Carpenter who lived in wallingford with wife Harriet,Elke died in!
1896 hewife died in 1904 aso a Joseph Frank Carpenter who was father of Mrs Lula Hunter ( Carpenter) Kinkaid born 1908, Frank Died in 1950 in Maysville Ky, If anybody sees familer names ,places or anything please contact me ,I want to know more about this line of carpenters and tie them in to The New England Carpenters ,also about daniels will in Lewis Co Ky Courthouse will book d page 375 if anyone has access to that book or knows who does.I believe the delema of Danile and John being brothers has been proved that Daniel was Brother to John which makes Richard Carpenter Daniles father,Richard who built his log cabin in 1793 in what was mason Co Ky at the time and now is Fleming Co Ky.,I hope all this isn't to confusing ,I know it is for me ,But maybe someone can make since of it. Thank You for any help, and Thank You to those who read the whole thing!!
Sincerely,
Jerry Tuttle
Thanks to Bette and Terry for responding, and my uncle who is #37808 in
the DNA thingy and has the book too. All told me the same thing. I
guess, for now, I will just be "Some Descendant of Benjamin Carpenter"
:) . I got a little bit of my initial early Carpenter info from Jean
Grigsby's book "Sinkler-Sinclair-St. Clair: A family history" and then
Ken Morrow and Terry Carpenter filled me in a good while back. I cannot
back up any of this personally since it was all info given to me and I
don't have any copies of primary records.
My uncle told me there is controversy as to which listed children (via
Terry originally) of Benjamin Samson actually were his children, and
that William Bailey b ca 1808 (Edgefield Co?) SC or Burke Co GA may not
be one of Benjamin Samson's children after all, which is also what some
of Terry's comments a while back alluded to. This is somewhat strange,
y'all get a load of these convoluted bits of info:
A. William Bailey has sons Sampson Harman b 26 May 1833 and Benjamin
David b ca 1834 Coffee Co AL.
B. There were a Baily Carpenter Sr. and Baily Jr. of Burke Co in the
1790s. I did at one time have a photostat of the Savannah newspaper
page that listed Baily Carpenter as a tax delinquent in Burke Co Ga
either 1794 or 1795.
C. I read once that there apparently was a squatter community in the
1820s/30s on Dozier Ridge in Dale/Coffee Co AL. One of William Bailey
sons was Daniel Dozier "Dosh" b ca 1854.
Terry mentioned that Benjamin Samson may yet fit into the Tidewater VA
Carpenters somehow. Is the "Southside" of VA considered part of the
Tidewater? Benjamin Samson married ca 1806 Millie/Milly and had
children in SC and Dale/Coffee Co AL. Their son Sampson b ca 1816 SC
married ca 1838 AL Nancy Mabry/Maberry (b ca 1817?). There was an
established Mabry line from Union Co SC who came from the Southside of
VA, but Mabry researchers and I have been unable to tie Nancy in with
them. Some Mabrys apparently migrated to southeastern AL with my
Carpenters about 1820-1822. Somehow Franklin Co GA keeps getting
mentioned in with this, but I don't understand that angle at all.
Another listed son of Benjamin Samson was John G. b ca 1810 SC who
married ca 1834 Jemima Sarah Bluford. My Sampson's greatgrandson, my
greatgrandfather, was named Samuel Blueford.
My line is Benjamin Samson (SC to Dale/Coffee Co AL) > Sampson >
Sampson A. > Samuel J. > Samuel Blueford > St. Elmo Milton > John
Richard Sr. > John Richard "Rick" Jr. (me).
Oh well, that's where I'm stuck. Thanks again y'all,
Rick
